I'm a cynic...but mostly what war does is put a different bunch of jerks in charge (unless the jerks who were in charge win, in which case the same bunch of jerks are in charge).

Boy killed by an Alligator...ewwww...
by JH inalligator grabs, drowns boy in marina
tavares, florida (ap) -- a 10-foot alligator attacked and killed a 12-year-old boy who was swimming near a marina in central florida, police said.
brian griffin was pulled under the dark water wednesday, minutes after two friends spotted alligators and screamed for him to get out of the dead river where they had been swimming, witnesses said.. deputies and witnesses saw the alligator surface at least once with the boy in his jaws, but the animal quickly disappeared across the river, the orlando sentinel reported in a story for thursday editions.. the boy was under for at least 25 minutes before a sheriff's helicopter spotted him and dropped a buoy to guide deputies, who pulled him up.

When we went thru Florida we'd always see people swimming or fishing along banks, and gators floating just a couple of dozen feet away. If I lived in Florida I'd never go near fresh water.
Add to that, dumb people in housing developments think its 'cool' to throw food to them and get them to come when they're called. Then they get upset when Fido or junior get killed. Some people have no sense.

Fortune Favours The Brave?
by Englishman innow that you've left the witnesses behind, do you feel that you have become a more courageous person?.
i mean, more courageous than the average person?.
do you find that you can cock a snook at officials and remain untroubled by them?.

I thought it was "fortune favors the foolish." Oops. No wonder my life is screwed up.
I suppose that I'm more brave now that I'm not a JW, if only in the sense that my "Give-a-sh*t factor" is very low (as my brother puts it).

Except for ending Slavery, Fascism, Communism, and Genocide, war has not solved a thing!
Really, so there is no slavery, fascism, communism (China would find that interesting) or genocide anywhere in the world, anymore, huh?

The Top 10 Lies Happy Husbands Tell
by teejay in"sure, honey, that dress looks fine.
why he tells it: hassle avoidance.
men employ these "forgivable fibs" not just to avoid hurting you ("of course you don't look fat in that outfit") but to make their lives easier ("i think that wallpaper looks great") and to steer clear of trouble ("i guess cindy crawford's 'sexy' in a conventional kind of way, but she's not my cup of tea").. it's not that your man doesn't care what you wear or what the living room looks like -- he does.

My low point was when I had to hide the very old rusty waffle iron (which hadn't worked in 2 yrs & I had gotten another one from the flea market) - well, I hid it under the trash in the trashbag.....
SISTER!!! I hear you! I've done the same thing! The problem is, he looks thru the trash now!
He actually had a fit that I wanted to throw out a broken 20-year-old crock pot with no lid. He saved it somewhere.
I take things to goodwill and to the dumpster when he's at work. I bet I've taken (literally) 50 garbage bags of stuff to goodwill, and another 20 or so to the dumpster, and I'm not done yet.

If Monogamous Marriage is a Divine Invention
by Satanus inthen why do some animals also mate w only one mate for life?
even some termites mate monogamously.
why is it that some animals, the minority were given this divine institution by god, but to other animals god gave poligamy, and temporary shack up for fertilisation purposes only?

I think it's important to include in this equation the fact that before marriage was invented in its primitive form (by women)
Uh, uh, uh....I'd almost be more inclined to say it was invented by men... Women are "silent ovulators"...i.e., you can't tell by looking (or smelling) who's fertile. With a cow or a dog or a cat, the male (and sometimes all humans within earshot) is certain, not only when the female is fertile, but when she is 'not quite fertile but will soon be so I should stick around for a couple of days.'
Most Physical Anthropologists will tell you that silent ovulation (I believe that's the correct term) is evolution's way of getting the male to hang around longer...because he's never really sure when his genetic material will be passed on...so he's got to stick around and make sure he has sex with her a wide variety of times, and drive off any male who comes sniffing around, just in case.
In hunter-gatherer societies, it is the women who bring in the bulk of the food (I'm thinking up to something like 80%). The men's hunting is only sporadically successful. And most of those societies are not what we'd call "nuclear families", either...they were extended family groups that were small enough not to put too much strain on the immediate environment, but large enough to hunt in groups, and for protection against stalking predators, etc.
Besides, as for women inventing marriage...it doesn't really need to be the baby's father who helps raise it...it can be grandparents, uncles and aunts, siblings, other men...Evolution really favors any group who has help raising the young.
As my Phys Anth teacher was fond of saying (and I'm fond of repeating) "Men are expendable"

How Many Feel That The Bible Is Not "Inspired" After All???
by minimus inso many do quote a scripture to make a point against an idea, yet i see that a number do not seem to believe in the bible's inspiration, anyway.
so, do you believe that the bible is god's inspired word??
?

I don't believe the Bible is any more inspired than any other great work of fiction. Shoot, "The Hobbit" has probably been a source of more inspiration to me personally!
I often say that I consider all the holy books of different religions to be deserving of equal respect, but if I was to examine how I really feel, I'd have to admit I don't respect the Bible and its god as much, because of the crap I've been through because of it.

Always wanted to know what they were like as people (I can guess based on other family). I think it was their other (non-JW) brothers who were too cheap to pay for a funeral home for their dad when he died...they put him in the walk-in freezer and took him to the church funeral in the back of the pickup! (might have been cousins but I'm pretty sure it was brothers)

Or, are some animals divine, and some satanic?
Sex among animals has no "moral" judgement...it's just procreation. Some people think sex between humans is that way, too.

Monogamy (for life or shorter term) in the animal kingdom is usually closely tied to the amount of time and effort it takes to raise young. The more helpless the young and the longer it takes to get them to adulthood, the more likely the father will stick around and help. Otherwise, his genes will not live to go on. (this is not to imply that the males of those species understand this, but that natural selection has, over the generations, favored those males who stay to help raise young, where this is necessary)
