Islam is a religion of peace (2)

in behalf of the horrific events of saturday night, i just wanted to take a moment to remind everyone that islam is a religion of peace.

it doesn’t matter that the quran explicitly says that homosexuals should be stoned to death (7:84) - it’s still a religion of peace.

and it doesn’t matter that the scriptures say that all gay men should be killed (sunan 1:152) - islam doesn’t in anyway condone violence.. it doesn’t matter that every mainstream imam calls homosexuality a sin "worse the adultery" - it’s not a religion of bigotry.. it doesn’t matter that 61% of muslims in the uk think gay acts should be made illegal - islam has nothing against the gay community.. it doesn’t matter that countries with sharia law actively persecute the lgbt community - islam is all about peace and love.

Here is Australia 50 years ago there were prison sentences for homosexuality and the state governments have apologised for their stand to homosexuals that were imprisoned. This position is now seen like the dark ages and some of the young generation just find it hard to believe.

And yet Australia didn't make discrimination against LGBT people unlawful until 2013 and 60% of young LGBT Australians report experiencing homophobic verbal abuse. Being gay in Australia isn't exactly dreamy Barry, check some facts, more facts, or a recent claim that Australia is one of the west's most homophobic countries.

Presumably that homophobic abuse comes from immigrants only?

Witness Carts - A Vehicle for Significant Decline

i was stalking to a jw today about her recent experience on the carts and with being a jw generally.

until this conversation i considered the carts as just an ineffective preaching method and a harmless waste of time.

but now i wonder if the effect of the carts might be to produce noticeable decline in jw numbers.

I reckon they've got more carts in Edinburgh than Glasgow. I've seen them at Waverley station, Charlotte Square, the Royal Mile, Nicholson Street and Bruntsfield.
In Glasgow I've only ever seen them on Great Western Road next to Oran Mor and under the cavernous highland man's umbrella at the central station.

I think they're reducing here: they've disappeared from Middle Meadow Walk and the roof of the Waverley Market, rare at the West End, sporadic on the Royal Mile and on St Andrew Sq: I've spent the last 2 days working on the latter and watched the JWs and the carts and there was zero interaction with the public. It looks mind numbing but at least they've topped up their tans this week.

Heavy sigh.

children raised as JWs are victims because they are being taught to be prejudiced. Not just of homosexuality but a whole host of other things. The JWs have a distorted view of a vast range of things beyond sexuality.

But this cartoon is about teaching prejudice against homosexuals, not adulterers, theives or gluttons. I'm not shocked by it, I've never said I was outraged, nor have I said it should be banned (I've not even waved my hands our flounced).

i stand by the statement that this is cartoon designed to instill prejudice against homosexuals in JW children and I think that's homophobic. I think the Bible's homophobic too.

I sincerely hope you will survive me thinking differently from you.

Is homophobia a crime?

If the "video still sends out an unhealthy and distorted message about human sexuality" I'd say it is designed to incite prejudice. It's not a crime.

You make a good point, I can and should be more active about such matters. But, as I said, I'm a biologist. Politicians get paid handsomely (c. £70,000pa in UK, basic pay!) to deal with such issues. It's their full-time job.

Politicians respond to voters, if you don't talk to them they don't have to do anything. If you're not actively doing anything LUHE, surely, by your own reasoning you are tolerating atrocities.

I find"being a biologist" a rather hilarious excuse for inaction.

I've never once said the video should be banned. I've just said its homophobic and it should be exposed as such.

Some people get quite hysterical and hand wavey over the use of the word homophobia.

Oxford Dictionaries definition

Dislike of or prejudice against homosexual people.
