  a petition has been launched in australia to coincide with the child abuse royal commission's adverse findings against watchtower and jehovah's witnesses.

  Very interested to see where this goes. Overall it's well structured but I am not sure where the child slave labour element comes in. It used to be the case that children were regularly included in volunteer work in construction and food prep at assemblies but I would be surprised if Australia is any different to the UK, US and (AFAIK) Europe in only allowing those over 16 onto sites along with the fact there is no organised food prep any more except for some schools - which kids would rarely if ever be involved in.

  I can recall anything in print which encourages the forcible inclusion of children in construction, food or other voluntary activities. Of course some kids are made to do some things like hall cleaning and most have to go on the ministry but I think you'd be hard pressed to count that as child slavery.

  Sadly I think that bit undermines the rest of the genuinely strong arguments in the petition.

Or.. put your hand up at the meeting tomorrow and spout on about how you've been setting these apostates straight on jehovahs-witnesses.com.   What struck me is the distinct lack of diversity in the pictures showing the Writing Committee. I am amazed that it would appear that only older white men are qualified to consider what goes in the publications.

  I also thought it was quite funny that Losch turned up to give a guided tour. If I go can I have the WT's own Wallace - Bro Lett?

  You'll now be very hard pressed to find any JW publication that explicitly admonishes parents to hit (or spank - a more PC word) their children. But if you can, I will sit up and take note.

  Agreed, so in typical JW fashion, their lack of clarity on the matter allows the extreme to continue.

  I recently had an uncomfortable discussion with a sister a similar age to me about smacking and she was very much of the view there should be more of it. She didn't like me asking her how she managed to stop her self hitting her child in anger, sit down, get calm, think about a suitable response and then muster up some kind of feeling (which can't be anger) but allows her to do it anyway as per the WTS advice.

  Fair points Richard and I understand the implications regarding clergy/penitent privilege however they still have a choice about how they choose to handle an allegation. Given that laws are different in different countries or even within countries I actually don't think it is a problem for an elder to ring Bethel Legal and find out what their obligations are.

  It is after this that I think the problem comes. The instructions and reality of how they are implemented on the ground have resulted in allegations not being reported to the appropriate authorities. The instructions have changed over time to try and reduce and remove the chance that a direct written instruction can be blamed but the culture still remains. The general culture of remaining loyal, not bringing Jehovah's name into disrepute and so on has limited this being challenged from the ground up.

  The WTS response to legal and civil challenge remains one of legal obfuscation. It's true that the legally correct and morally correct thing to do may conflict (e.g. does an elder supposedly bound by clergy/penitent privilege inform the police that an 12 year old girl is possibly being abused by her father) but their position seems to remain entrenched in one of "do nothing that will compromise the organisation legally" rather than be prepared to stand up and support their elders who choose to do the right thing.

  Instead of whining about "we can't do this or that because we're tied down by the laws" they should be going "damn right we told the police and we'll fight to change the law if the law is stupid" - just like they did (and continue to do) when they fought for things like not saluting the flag, freedom to preach and so on.
