I think you may be right AnnOMaly. The person I spoke with has been in daily face to face contact with the parents and family through the entire ordeal, visiting at the hospital, caring for the siblings etc. It seems this action was a total surprise and completely unexpected. The parents are under immense strain and whilst it is easy to look at the situation from afar and wonder what the hell they are doing, it simply seems the overwhelming stress of the situation is clouding their judgement.

So... from knowing nothing about this I have spoken to someone I know in the congregation where this family is in Portsmouth.
Apparently the poor child has been sick for a while and the congregation has been providing alot of support. It's a large family and the mother has been pretty much 24/7 at the hospital and the dad has been there everyday as well. The congregation have been supporting the family and taking care of the other kids, providing food, going to the hospital etc.
From what I understand, there is no court order and blood is not the issue. The poor boy had a major brain operation and he has not been able to recognise anyone or communicate in anyway since. The prognosis is poor. Regarding the reason for taking the child, even those who have beein in daily contact do not know. No one knows where they are heading or why. The phrase used was "the parents are distraught and desperate". Everyone close to the situation wants the parents to return.
There is clearly much more that will come to light but it does seem that this is a unilateral decision on the part of "distraught and desperate" parents. The priority is the child but my sympathy goes beyond the poor. sick child and to his parents and siblings. It is truly a sad and desperate situation.

BBC Radio have a read a statement from (presumably) Bethel confirming the family are witnesses but that they are not aware of the reasons for the child being removed from hospital.
The BBC were also at pains to say that, at the moment, the motivation is not clear - it could just be they want to take the child away for a holiday. Even the police were not able to confirm if the child was a Ward of Court. If not then what the parents choose to do is still their right and no crime has been committed.

Would it be possible for Simon to implement pinned threads? I've not seen this thread after >2 years on the board and it is one of the best threads I have read. It is not easy for everyone to read Steven Hassans' books so this focus on how the BITE model is implemented in the WTS is essential reading.
BTTT every week I say!

Will the WT get a twitter account?
by bohm inwith the recent success of the website which really seem to be working beyond at least my expectations, will the wt get a twitter account in the near(ish) future?.
those who guess right win the bragging rights.
my guess is no since twitter invite to much discussion, however they will eventually jump on a popular twitter-like social media service when one arise that is more easily controlled..

I seriously doubt the WTS will engage in twitter, facebook etc. as they would spend so much time deleting abusive comments. I would not be surprised if they have bagged a number of jw.org/WTS type account names however.

Fudging the Numbers: Is the WTBTS in decline?
by Coded Logic init's no secret that the wtbts has a cash flow problem.
over the past three years they have closed 20 of their 116 branches.
they have sold off most of their properties in and around ny (including some kingdom halls), drastically reduced the # of printed pages for the watchtower and awake magazines, reduced the printing of books and other materials, increased the number of single page tract campagnes, installed cc machines at their assembly halls, and are now seizing of controll of property assets from local kingdom halls using renovation projects.

There were 63 baptised in Scotland at the convention. Add on those baptised at the circuit & special days and you are maybe talking about 140 for the year. That's in a country of 5.5 million people and is mostly made up of JW kids getting their rite of passage dunk at 14 - 16 years old. So maybe 50 have come in through the ministry. That is a tiny amount and doubtless typical of most european countries. The WTBTS has definitely gone ex-growth now in the 1st world.
There were around 340 (ish) baptised at Twickenham and I recall the number for all the conventions around the UK being somewhere around 700. I know many waited for Twickenham so I expect the numbers at SA/CA events to be less. I still expect growth for the UK at around 1-2%.

the insanity of Sam herds talks at the convention
by purrpurr ini've picked up two that stood out to me but i'm sure others will have noticed more:.
he gave an illustration about fearing god and he said it is like a wife who has spent all day preparing the evening meal for her husband and she hears him come home and perhaps she is trembling a bit out of fear that he might not like the meal she has cooked for him....!!!!!!!!????.
the other was about verbal abuse and how it should not be used but rather than site the effect it has or the forms it can take he said that we shouldn't call each other " dumb dumb" or "knuckle head" .

I agree about the deep rooted sexism Paris. I am not suggesting that's what I thought about Sam Herd, just reflecting the concensus of opinion I heard from conversations with various ones. Even some of the most independent sisters I know thought he was lovely. It's the cult of personality.
