Okay, Someone "Enlighten" Me... Pleas...
by AGuest injust what is it that saddam hussein has done/is alleged to have done... to warrant a war by the us upon his country, and the most certain result of mass murder of innocent men, women and children, as a result?.
now, i also ask you: please be careful in your response, as all i want are facts, versus emotional vengefulness... and such facts that say this is what he has done so that the us is rightfully entitled to war against iraq.
to that end, then, i would also ask that you make sure your reply takes into account that the us itself has not done similar... or equal... anywhere else in the world... so as to warrant the same result on upon them.. i await your response... and i truthfully bid you peace.. sj, a slave of christ, who is still trying to understand the "thoughts"... of earthling man... though i serious doubt i will....

That's the only reason I can see. The Bush administration yet again shows a lack of foresight.
Geez, why is it suddenly the Bush adminstration's fault? What did the Clinton administration do for eight years regarding the pursuit of alternate fuel sources. What did Mr. Environment aka Al Gore do?
Yes, I agree that the Federal governement needs to do more but I've grown tired of screaming and pointing fingers at the Bush administration while at the same time driving giant SUVs.
I find it funny that there are hundreds of thousands of hard-core environmentalists here in the US but Honda and Toyota have only sold a few thousand hybred cars here in the States. These people can talk the talk but can't walk the walk.

The technology has been around for decides, and YES, the oil and automobile companies DID keep it from development because they were not the ones who came up with it and they did not want to tool up to produce it.
Dave, exactly HOW did the car and oil companies stop the development of this technology? I will agree that the automobile makers fight against the governments efforts to raise the minimum mpg for cars. You know why? Because it costs money to develop more fuel efficent cars, money you and I aren't willing to pay because gas is so cheap.
Barring the recent spike in gas prices, which would the average SUV buyer purchase. One, a "standard" Ford Explorer which get 20mpg at a cost of $28,000.00 or a "hybred" Explorer which get 35 mpg but costs $40,000.00? They'll pocket the $12,000.00 and buy the standard Explorer. Ford knows this so why invest a ton of money in hydred cars. Now second senerio. Same priced but gas now costs $3.50 a gallon. Suddenly Ford can't produce enough hybred cars.
I'll even give you a real life example. A couple of years ago when gas prices sudden hit $2.50 a gallon, the local Honda dealers in Chicago couldn't keep up with the demand for it's Insight hybred car. Soon after gas prices again fell, people went back to buying Accords.
Regarding your comments on gas prices and plastics...I agree. As a plastics engineer I've seen resin prices go through the roof recenty. All of us have an interest in seeing the free flow of oil from the middle east.
Dave, one last question....what kind of vehicle do you drive?

Here in America we have a huge oil resources in Alaska. We do not tap into the majority of it because we do not want to mess up the pristine wilderness. So, we get our oil, just like everyone else from the middle east.
No, we don't tap into the Alaska (and Texas) reserves because it's simply cheaper to buy it from the middle east.
We would not need to be the biggest glutton of oil in the world if the powers to be would allow the those who have invented devices that can increase gas mileage twenty times it's average now to produce their products. It's a little odd that we have the technology to make stealth bombers and a space station floating around our planet but we can't seem to figure out how to make a car that travels on an alternative fuel that will take away our dependency on oil.
"the powers to be" who is that? Oil compaines? Government? Well, these cars DO exist but the PEOPLE like you and me aren't buying these cars. The Honda Insight gets 70 mpg. But how many do you see on the road? A few but not many. Why not? Because people would rather pocket the extra $2,500.00 extra that this car costs and buy a similiar one, even though the mph is far less. Companies will produce what sells. No force on earth can stop this. Ford has in the works a hybred F-150 truck. If it would costs the same as a "standard" engine F-150 and has the same power and doesn't cost more to mantain, it will sell like crazy. But if the hybred engine makes the vehicle cost more and gas prices stay low, people will not buy it. Economics 101.
The same is true will solar power vs. natural gas. Because natural gas is still so cheap, why should I invest the money to solar power my house? There isn't anyone stopping me. It's just a matter of ROI (return on investment).
I do agree that the US's dependency on oil is a HUGE problem. And I believe the government knows this. Back in the '70's when the oil embargo hit us, we were importing only 50%. Now this figure is 65%. Yes, the the US has an interest in seeing the flow of oil continue. However, the war is about the threat to the US, not about oil.

Ok, enough already. Here are the items to consider...
1. Hussein is in voilation of UN resolution 1441 which gave Iraq one last chance to PROVE that they've detroyed their weapons of mass destruction.
2. There is proof that not only have they not done this but they are pursuing more weapon programs. From detailed satellite photos to intercepted calls, it is known that Iraq continues to these "build and hide" programs. No one except Hussein denies this evidence.
3. Iraq has not given any evidence that thei WMD have been destroyed. Hussein simply says "the WMD were destroyed along with the records." Do you believe him? He has never accounted for the large quanities of nerve agents, viruses and poison gas that he is known to have. Again, no proof has been given showing that these items have been destroyed.
4. Hussein has been and is testing long-range and short-range missles as well as unmanned aircraft to deliver these "non-existent" weapons.
5. Hussein has been linked to terror groups. While the evidence on this alligations isn't overwhelming, it still exists. He has funneled money to differnt terrorists groups. He has set up terrorist camps in Iraq. The recent killing of the US aid worker in Jordan was linked to an Al Qaeda cell based in Iraq. Again, while a little bit murky, these terrorist ties exist. It scares me to death the possibility of a terrorist group having acces to WMD.
There you go.

Besides, he's being stupid. Anyone who's worth their salt knows it's impossible to fight a war on 2 fronts and win.
Let's see, during WWII, America fought Japan in the Pacific and Germany in Europe. Before you call the Prez stupid, read your history.

Let me reiterate that Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton and Louis Farrakhan are only three people, they don't speak for all Blacks, okay? Got it?!
It is a shame that the media potrays these men as the leaders of the black community when the majority of blacks think these guys are idiots. As a matter of fact, Jesse takes everything he can from the black community. Here in Chicago he was going to lead a boycott of Anheiser Busch (sp? the beer company) because of the lack of African American distributors in the Chicago-land area. The beer company caved in to Jesse. Guess who got rights to distribute here in Chicago??? Jesse's own two sons!!!!!!!!! With this and his little girlfriend on the side, you'd think he'd loose support but he's going stronger then ever. He knows how to play the MLK card and get people emotional. It's a dam shame because the last thing the black community in Chicago needs is another person taking from them.
I do see the tide turning and black Americans realizing that these so-called leaders of theirs and their goverment programs are the problem. Handouts are only a temporary solution and have lead to several generations of people dependent on the government. It almost seems that certain leaders want blacks to be dependent upon the government. Almost as if they weren't, these leaders would loose their power base.
One last thing and I'm aiming these at all those who are connecting government handouts only with poor blacks. The biggest reciepent of government aid is.....FARMERS! Yup. I live just outside of Chicago, in a farming community. Farmers love the government's program to keep food prices artifically higher. How do they do this? They pay farmers not to grow food. One farmer down the road from me received this past year over $500,000.00 NOT to grow crops. Kind of amazing that when people complain about government handouts and special treatment, they always tie in poor blacks but never white farmers. I wonder why???

by ScoobySnax ini've been inactive for a few years now, and yet, despite all i read, i can't feel as you mostly all do.
i have a lot of happy memories of being "in the truth" (and i know how much some here hate that line) and fond memories of the meetings and assemblies, sure it was much easier to break away and live life like i am now,..... but well, thats just how i feel.
i can understand those that may leave for personal reasons, but not sure i'll ever understand some here who have such a hatred of anything jw related.
