Terri,
You have to be kidding me? It looks pretty much like an unusual natural feature of the landscape, or a man-made artifact to me.
Orbs are NOT spirits. Digital cameras are notorious for producing orbs in low-light conditions. They are out of focus dust particles and flying insects that get caught on the flash. I have created pictures with orbs myself - it's not difficult.
It is fun to imagine that it is a ghost, though. :)

hey everybody! i'm not a christian anymore and i'm so happy about that lol
by Fleur inokay, this is interesting to me.. first a little bit of background on me, i was introduced to jw-ism as a zygote, raised in and baptized at the tender age of 12. i got baptized because my beloved grandfather had just passed away and i was told that if i wasn't baptized i wouldn't get to the new order and i wouldn't ever see him again.
no pressure or anything.... i really truly believed everything for the first two decades of my life.
really started doubting at 25, left at 26 (they df'd me even though i disassociated myself in a letter to the elders first).

Horray! :)
I know the day I finally admitted to myself that I was an atheist was one of the scariest days of my life. Kinda weird. But then after that brief panic... relief.

Is this a Young People Ask article? :-p
I think mental masterbation is fun for the masterdebater, but is no fun for any observers.

Astrology is an imbecilic belief (no dissenting discussion please)
by rem inhow can supposedly intelligent adults actually believe (and waste any time) on this astrology crap?
are they mentally handicapped?
is it genetic?

rem
FMZ,
First of all, I was attacking ideas, not people. Secondly the word imbecilic was originally put in the mouth of non-believers on another thread: http://www.jehovahs-witness.com/12/70651/6.ashx. I was recycling the term for humor.
As far as asking whether it's possible that people who believe in imbecilic things are mentally handicapped, etc., I see no problem with it. It is just one possible explanation among many that I thought was worth discussing. I never claimed that anyone who had these imbecilic beliefs actually were mentally handicapped. I don't see any reason to restrict the discussion to your politically correct views.
Take care! :)

Alan and Realist,
I have a business proposition: How about selling a homeopathic cure-all called Placebex... or Placebonol. It works on the scientifically verified phenomenon of the placebo effect. It's simply amazing. This bottle of 20 dihydrogen-oxide pills sell for an unbeatably low price of $19.95. Act now while supplies last! The first 50 callers get a free astrological reading. If you're not satisfied, you get your money back.

FMZ,
It is true that I was making a point. Notice the ;) (sarcasm).
Do you believe in Astrology?
El Blanko
>> There is also no evidence that the fabric of your own reality that you have defined by sources outside of your own thorough understanding actually exists.
I believe in my reality because I'm a pragmatist (I think therefore I am) - I'm not a Phyrronic skeptic.
I'll look up the book you recommended. Thanks!

Hey you guys, we are trying to have a discussion here about the mind of a believer and you are trying to hijack this thread by trying to prove Astrology. This discoussion is for non-believers only. ;)

El Blanko,
>> Whose controlled experiments?
There have been several controlled expiriments on Astrology:
Dean, G. (1977). Recent Advances in Natal Astrology. Subiaco, Western Australia: Analogic (Reviewed studies on the correlation between Astrological signs and Introversion and Extroversion. Found there was no such correlation that Astrology predicts)
Forlano, G., and Ehrlich, V. (1941). "Month and Season of Birth in Relation to Intelligence, Introversion-Extroversion and Inferiority Feelings." Journal of Education Research, 32, 1-2 (Examined the birth dates of 7,827 male college students and found no effect of any sun sign on extroversion and introversion as predicted by Astrology)
Lim, R. (1975). "Zodiacal Sign Polarities as an Index of Introversion Extroversion." Unpublished master's thesis. San Francisco State University (Used 163 subjects and found no correlation between extroversion and introversion and sun signs as expected by Astrology)
Eyesenck, H., and Nias, D. (1982). Astrology: Science or Superstition? New York: St. Martin's Press (Showed that their earlier study (1978) of 2,324 individuals that seemed to support the hypothesis of Astrological influence on extroversion and introversion was flawed and the result artifactual. Specifically, the subjects had knowledge of their astrological sign and the type of personality that is supposed to correlate with each sign.)
Mayo, J., White, O., and Eyesenck, H. (1978). "An Empirical Study of the Relation Between Astrological Factors and Personality." Journal of Social Psychology, 105, 229-236 (Study referenced above)
I have a lot more and can provide more detail if you are interested.
>> Does every aspect of our life only exist through controlled experiments? Like, ahem, a belief in God?
I don't believe in gods. There is no evidence of any gods.
>> Your experiment to control this thread is beginning to fail
My failure in controlling this thread has proven the skeptic's point. Please refer to http://www.jehovahs-witness.com/12/70651/1.ashx
I was not aware that Colin Wilson had any peer-reviewed studies about Astrology published in respected scientific journals. Could you please point me to them?
I recommend you read the following books to get a true scientific perspective on Astrology and other pseudoscientific beliefs:
Demon Haunted World, Carl Sagan
In Search of the Light, Susan Blackmore
Pseudoscience and the Paranormal, Terrence Hines
Why People Believe Weird Things, Michael Shermer
How to Think About Weird Things, Schick
