Based on the information so far (nod to Blondie) it seems borderline whether codexs existed in the 1st Century or only scrolls.
The Century is in question, but as BluesBrother pointed out apostasy exploded at the beginning of the 2nd Century after the death of the Apostles, so it's likely a 1st Century depiction.
At any rate, copies of Scripture were very rare at the time. Isn't it true that a person needed to be wealthy to own one? An ordinary Christian family man would not have been able to have the Scriptures, scroll or codex. And if he did have one, it seems unlikely he would have carryied it around in public.
As Phizzy says, they are making early Christians look just like modern JWs.
