this will take place at the first weekend in may.. i'm going to talk about the difficulties you have to face when leaving the jw.

A high school is having you come in and give a speech to the students about a certain religion and cults in general? You must not be in the United States?

I know that there are a lot of sporadic viewers and “lurkers” who are still “in” and don’t log into this forum or any other website because they have been taught doing so will welcome demonic influence from us mentally ill individuals who decided to leave the JW religion of our own free well.
This post is for you.
One thing I always was confused about while I was “in” was the status of the Watchtower group being a cult. By my understanding they met the criteria however it was adamantly denied by people who were active and in on the flip side just about anyone who left the group or got kicked out eventually decided they were in fact a cult. When I started my final fade and ultimately cut ties with the group one of the things I was shocked to discover was that governments around the world, including the United States classified Jehovah’s Witnesses as a cult. In some cases they went so far as to ban JW’s on this basis, but you rarely if ever hear the C word from the platform. Now that I know the truth it always frustrates me when a JW tries to dispute the cult status.
Below are a couple links that I found doing a very basic Google search. Two are from Wikipedia, the first defines a cult and the second is a list of the major world powers who classify the group as a cult.
The easiest way to locate their entries is to go to the page and on your keyboard bring up the page search bar by holding down the control button and then pressing F so cntrl+F. This will bring up a search bar that will search the text on the page for a term. Search for “Jehovah” and click “highlight all”.
This should prove some interesting reading from a neutral source. No apostate spin, no JW spin…simply the facts as viewed from the majority of humanity.
Wiki page about Goverments and Cults
Top Ten Cults To be fair this one is from a random Christian website not wiki. JW's are #2 on the list just behind LDS and Scientology is #3.
Happy reading.

I may be way off scope here but I always thought it was funny that they banned celebrating birthdays because two people died… obviously the problem here was that the EVIL bloodthirsty king was celebrating a birthday and not the fact that he was an evil bloodthirsty person… The bible mentions it twice and both times someone died. Had I read that as a normal thinking person I would have assumed that the problem was the fact that they had a murderous king with absolute power who had someone murdered… not the day the murder took place.
If you follow that line of thinking then prayer should be forbidden as well. How many times in the bible did someone talking to god or god talking to someone result in death and destruction? Every time god showed up thousands of Israelites died not to mention the mass genocides they led based on gods direction… Two deaths at a birthday and 3,000 years later we can’t have cake… millions slaughtered at gods direction and we are encouraged to have a personal relationship with him.
Logical.

@cobaltcupcake
(love the handle btw, very nice)
I actually had a very similar thought probably about the same time. I was pretty young (early teens) at the time but I very avid reader and I knew the theory behind their teachings by heart, my parents used to insist I read every magazine and studied every meeting before I could read anything not printed by WTBTS so I was force fed their teachings and memorized it all. I remember being really confused about “new light” and asking my parents and actually my bible study conductor if I could get a new bible. They wanted to know what was wrong with my old bible and I told them I wanted the recently revised version that god had sent down to provide the “new light”…that really stumped them and the best explanation I got was “it doesn’t work that way”
Years later I was still living with my parents but against my will and one of their conditions was that I went to meetings (I would say this was about 2004). They had us study the Revelation book over for the “Book Study” or “BS Night” as I called it. Anyway, as you all probably remember they had us study this book during BS several times in the 90’s then cut down on it while we repeatedly studied the now defunct “Knowledge Book” followed by several rounds of the “Greatest Man” book and a few weird tracts, this kept us busy for several years… anyway before we could study The Revelation book again they sent several pages of revisions that had to be cut out and then a taped or glued over entire paragraphs of information in the Revelation book. I remember our book study conductor’s copy was so torn up after he made all the revisions that he had pages falling out of it during meeting. The whole thing was comical. I have never understood how a group of people who are so trained to recognize and combat political BS and BS from other religions can be so hoodwinked when it happens before their eyes.

Mark Sanderson gets official intro in July 15th Watchtower
by cedars inin all the hysteria surrounding the "new light" in the forthcoming july 15th watchtower, i forgot to mention that the magazine carries information on the "new governing body member" - who i think we can all safely assume is mark sanderson.. sadly i didn't get scans of the pages in question - just the juicy doctrinal stuff.
still, i thought it was worth a mention!.

Thanks for that link and the great info…
So from my corporate background this looks like nothing more than a corporate restructuring with a slight policy change. I don’t see any new light here just pure BS designed to invigorate the base into a nice froth.
I also interpret this as some sort attempt to save face regarding the 1918 date and the fact that those events have now been rescheduled to an undetermined future date in the near VERY near future.
In the words of the late great George Carlin
It's all BS folks and it's BAD for ya!

Mrquik,
That’s very interesting thanks for the update. I haven’t touched any of their publications in about 3 years so I am out of “the know”. Is the 2014 thing speculation on our part or have they actually printed something vaguely indicating 2014 may be the new year?
I think if they have printed the 2014 thing they are using it as a tourniquet to try and stop the hemorrhage of members they have been experiencing. I sat down and thought about the number of baptized publisher in the past 2 years that I know who left… is topped counting at 20 if you include children and teens who were never baptized but left on their own or with their parents that number has got to be near 100 people. The crazy thing about that is my view only includes about a half dozen congregations.
