one of the reasons is that people are disturbed by what is happening in their churches.
yes, millions of persons have been shocked to learn that things they were taught as being vital for salvation are now considered by their church to be wrong.
have you, too, felt discouragement, or even despair, because of what is happening in your church?

Woman sentenced to death by stoning
BY OUR FOREIGN STAFF
A COURT in Iran has sentenced a woman to be stoned to death for adultery and helping her lover to murder her husband in Tehran.
The lover, who is the woman’s cousin, is to be hanged. Both will receive 100 lashes first, the government daily Iran newspaper reported. If the woman manages to survive being stoned, she will have to serve 15 years in jail. Survival is unlikely because she will be buried up to her neck.
Stoning is rare in Iran, where drug-smugglers and murderers are regularly hanged under strict Islamic Sharia. The last time two Iranians were stoned to death for adultery was in June 1996. A woman was stoned to death last month at a Tehran prison eight years after she was charged with acting in pornographic films. The sentence was carried out after the verdict was upheld by the Supreme Court.
Men sentenced to be stoned to death are buried waist-deep in the ground. If they have confessed to their crimes and manage to escape, they can go free.
Human rights groups fear that hardliners who control the judiciary are using stonings to embarrass President Khatami, a reformist.
Iran’s penal code relating to adultery carefully regulates the size of the stones. They must be neither too big nor too small, so that death is neither mercifully quick nor prolonged.
Also let me get this right.....the guy is buried upto his waist and if he gets away he can go free - the woman is buried upto her neck and if she survives she does 15 yrs?!
Nice culture folks!

millions now living will never have a life that should have been the proclamation in the 1920s.
it certainly turned out to be the case for those who listened.
often you get a real insight into this by considering the wasted-life stories that appear in the magazines.
Lisa,I did notice the name of the caravan! If that was 'plenty' I wouldn't like to see 'scarce' or 'not much'!

Thanks Randy.........I'll add that letter to my collection!
Ever wondered on the WTS's liability for abuse? Well not that easy. The miscreant is always primarily responsible BUT the WTS or at least the British branch have created a most obvious case where they will be responsible.
The elders may have written to the branch office and given full details about a former child abuser who is currently serving as an elder or ministerial servant. In such a case, if the branch office has decided that he can be appointed or continue serving in a position of trust because the sin occurred many years ago and because he has lived an exemplary life since then, his name should not appear on the List, nor is it necessary to pass on information about the brother’s past sin if he moves to another congregation unless contrary instructions have been given by the branch.
Why shouldn't the offender be on the 'List'? Why shouldn't it be passed onto another congregation? Why make the exception? If one of these guys steps out of line......the WTS is liable IMO. It could have taken this opportunity to put matters right or at least afford the congregation with the highest standards of protection. But it didn't.

what makes someone 'beautiful' to you?
has it changed over the years, so that you consider something else?
what attracts you to someone?
Hey thanks so far……….

Thanks for your contribution. I think you have it right for someone looking for a long term partner. If you are looking to have a family those qualities are very important.
Intelligence.
Humor.
Easy-going nature.
Loyalty.
Loving and demonstrably affectionate.
It is such a cliche, maybe 'cause it's so true, but beauty truely is...'in the eye of the beholder'. Beyond that, nothing else matters.
I think that is true in the sense we will always argue over who is more fanciable. Is it Britney or Anna Kournikova. We each have our personal tastes as to who is a goddess or god for that matter.
Where it is not true is that people the world over agree on what faces are beautiful. This is true whether judging men or women or people from outside our racial group. Interestingly…in 1993 anthropologists Jones and Hill journeyed to 2 isolated tribes of Indians in Venezuela and Paraguay. These tribes had seen very few people outside their own village. No TV etc. They were shown a range of photos of women from different cultures and were asked to rate them on beauty. Their results were compared to the same tests in developed countries such as the US, Russia and Brazil. There was little difference in the results. In short people were attracted to women with delicate jaws and chins and large eyes.

You took matters in a different direction and I wonder if many had considered this…….
Ultimately it comes down to pheromones and smells for me, also. I have to like the person's "scent". They can reek of body odor while working outdoors, but their "scent" is underneath all that. A shower can take care of BO. No matter how gorgeous the person is, their scent is what makes or breaks whether I'll get involved with them. If I don't like their scent, I'll just be friends and nothing more.

Symmetry is a large factor in what I look for.
Two very important features which are not entirely unconnected. Pheromones were largely unknown until the ‘80s. These ‘aromas’ which we give up are undetectable but are taken into our olfactory organs……and they do alter our behaviour……particularly with sexual attraction. Suzy, I guess you have checked out what Thornhill and Grammer did. For those that don’t know, these biologists tested the effects of pheremones on humans. They asked a number of men to sleep in the same T-shirt for 3 nights, with NO deodorant! The shirts took on the pheromones of the men. Meanwhile they measured the men’s faces for symmetry A group of women were asked to assess the attractiveness of the faces and they favoured those with symmetry. Another group of women were given the T-shirts and asked to rate the ‘smell’. The surprising result was that the men with the most symmetrical faces produced the nicest smelling shirts……but only when the women were ovulating…..i.e. when nature was suggesting something!

What makes someone 'beautiful' to you? Has it changed over the years, so that you consider something else? What attracts you to someone? For men it is often what inspires lust. But for long term partners do we think the same? After all there family issues like children to consider. What about the ladies.....do they choose the 'tall, dark and handsome' type of guy? Would it surprise you to learn that women prefer an average-looking professional to a good looking manual worker? In lonely hearts columns men nearly always put information about their wealth whereas women do not. Typically they state whether they are financially secure, have a car and a home owner. Women concentrate on their attractiveness and 'fun' personality. Is it a 'Marlboro Man' look complete with massive amounts of testosterone? Or does that make you think the guy might have aggressive tendencies? Or would it be the Leonardo DiCaprio/Johnathon Rhys Meyers feminine type look that may suggest a caring and affectionate person?
So how about it.......?

with the news that the killers of jamie bulger have been released, it would be interesting to know how people feel.. from the mcveigh thread it seems that many americans believe the death penalty would have been appropriate.. i do not know whether many in the us know of the case in britain of a 2 year old being tortured and murdered by two 10 year olds.
but now 8 years later they have been released.. i know of the arguments that they have been rehabilitated since killing jamie bulger.....but is this really justice?
Hey group whilst this is a hot topic here and elsewhere.......I think little thought has been on the fact that these 2 guys are dogmeat. How long do you think it will be before 'justice is done' street style? 6months?
The release maybe 'just' depending on your viewpoint.

Kent made an apology to the board……so what you may think. But my point is that we have license to say pretty much what we like here. But as we all know that does not mean that we do. Many of us show due restraint and avoid causing undue offence to other posters. This is very pleasant and makes for good relations with others. It helps us focus on the real issues and the real enemies of truth.
However, the whole range of JW issues is such that you cannot expect all to adhere to this. We find people of all sorts here, in different stages of development as it were, coping with a whole distribution of problems and situations. These have, sometimes, attached to them the strongest of feelings and emotions…..on both sides of the WTS fence. You also have people from different cultures and backgrounds. No wonder things get a little out of hand here now and then. But allowances have to be made.
But at least in the case of Kent, he had the opportunity to say what he wanted and later on reflection have the opportunity to make his apology. That reflects very well on Kent but also this board for allowing him. On other boards posters would face moderator warnings, deleted threads and other action.
At the end of the day we are interested in the truth. Sometimes it hurts and offends us. But that is something we will in time take on board.
There are threads where you see a lot of fighting BUT something which is inevitable and IMO , to a certain extent HEALTHY. It takes that sometimes to make you think, it did for me. However, if you say too much, something stupid, out of order you can end up looking an idiot. So the matter tends to self-regulate, with very few interventions from Simon. At least we fight and are allowed to. We are also allowed to then make friends, as appropriate. Does it makes us better? I think it does. Its all part of growing…..growing up and growing together.
So well done Kent, the Board and Everyone!

Hey dig...was only thinking about this the other day.
Anyway....most folks here were against the release. But there seems to be other forces at work i.e. Brussels etc.
But life is not going to be any slam dunk for these 2. They will live in fear of anyone uncovering their identities. Their recent pictures have been leaked already and they have to be in constant contact with their parole officers. They also have to box clever when people inquire what they have been upto these last 6 years or so. Some people , i.e. local parole officers and clerical workers will know their identity etc. It is a matter of time before the info gets on the net or something.
They might have been better off in prison.
