  Jehovah's Witnesses ... Proclaimers of "soon, very soon" since 1879

  the first edition of the watchtower magazine, july 1879, made the following comment on page 5 regarding how "soon" the end of this system will come:.

  I had a discussion with my Dad about 5 years ago on this very subject. He was saying Armageddon is coming soon. I asked him how he can know that as Watchtower has been saying this for years. He replied it was because the economy was so bad. I said to him "Is the economy as bad as it was during the Great Depression?"

  He replied with a tentative "Noooo."

  I said "Wouldn't it seem more likely then that if a bad economy was the reason it will come 'soon', that the end should have come back then?"

  I got the deer-in-the-headlights look.

  I then said "The Watchtower needs to stop saying it's coming soon. They lose credibility when it doesn't. It's like crying wolf. People stop listening to you."

  Why did God permit Scriptures to be corrupted?

  if someone informs you that your shop caught fire, and firefighters are on the job, you will run to the spot.

  however, if you had already sold that property on the previous day (which this messenger is ignorant of), you are likely to respond, saying: shop is not mine..

  situation is same with god.

  How many here gave up having a family for the sake of the "truth"?

  this is a sensitive topic for many of us i know, but i am wondering how many here actually gave up the idea of having a family "in this system" for the sake of "kingdom activity or service"??.

  I am 51 and did not have children.

  For one, I was too afraid to. The whole Armageddon imminently arriving and the no blood policy had lasting, negative effects on me.

  I was also not going to allow anyone to have control over me like Botchtower said women were supposed to do. So I focused on my career ensuring I was able to financially support myself. I did not want to have to rely on anyone especially an abusive man.

  How do stop myself getting too Bitter?

  you know, i always maintained that during this fading process, and while learning ttatt, i would not let myself get "bitter twisted and angry".... but, in all honesty, if i examine myself, i have become quite bitter toward the org, toward the false friends and the gb.. i have become angry as i see the extent of damage i feel being raised in "the truth" has done.... i feel hurt towards the lost opportunities in life etc.... how do i not allow myself to get too swallowed up by such bitterness?.

  i have always been a very happy, positive, selfless person.

  i can put people at ease, i am someone people feel comfortable chatting to.

  As to your question stuck, involve yourself in positive experiences as jwfacts and others have stated. It's the only cure for negativity. I think if you can't get past the bitterness, counseling might be in order.

  I'm not particularly thrilled with the Bible's misogyny. Some examples (there are more):
  

  1 Corinthians 11:5
  But every woman who prays or prophesies with her head uncovered dishonors her head--it is the same as having her head shaved.
  

  1 Corinthians 11:13
  Judge for yourselves: Is it proper for a woman to pray to God with her head uncovered?
  

  1 Corinthians 14:34: Women should remain silent in the churches. They are not allowed to speak, but must be in submission, as the law says.

  1 Corinthians 14:35
  If they want to inquire about something, they should ask their own husbands at home; for it is disgraceful for a woman to speak in the church.
  

  Ephesians 5:22
  Wives, submit yourselves to your own husbands as you do to the Lord.
  

  1 Timothy 2:11
  A woman should learn in quietness and full submission.

  Having Faith in the Bible

  i know many on here have lost faith in the bible , is it possible that is because ones do not have the right perspective regarding it .

  we have usually been taught by bad teachers , or ignorant .

  i believe if we take an honest look at the bible , we will see that it gives us the best answers to crucial matters , it gives us some amount of bearings ( understanding ) , which without having such knowledge we would all be more like walking zombies in amanner of speaking , we would be lacking hope in something better , for surely something better is to come , how can we be sure , .

  The issue is that the religious authorities of today trot this thing called the Bible out as some sort of inerrant, inspired word of God. Any Science book is far superior in factual knowledge than the Bible.

  If you have to have 'faith' in an ancient compilation spanning 1000 years authored by Middle Eastern desert dwellers attempting to explain the unexplainable, and has since been proved falable, I think this just shows you have abandoned logic and reason for madness.

  Pick what you like from it. But don't wave it around in public and definitely don't shove it down my throat or my kid's throat.

  Yes, the Bible is a compilation of ancient Bronze/Iron Age, Middle Eastern stories spanning over 1,000 years authored by desert dwellers attempting to explain the unexplainable. While it does contain a smattering of historical reference, it mostly contains factual errors, forgeries, exaggerations, superstition, fantasy, and contradictions.

  It is Science's pursuit of truth no matter where it leads us that has truly advanced our knowledge. I highly recommend reading a Science book over the Bible any day.
