Independent voices, including leading Jewish philanthropist Baron Eric de Rothschild who received an honorary doctorate from Hebrew University, suggest that the extent of antisemitism in Europe has been exaggerated. In an interview with the Jerusalem Post he says that "some of the complaints emanating from Israel about the treatment of French Jews amount to 'an element of schadenfreude (taking pleasure at another's misfortune) on the part of those who have already made aliya: When the cousins come over, they say, It's terrible [in France] - you have to come to Israel." About France he says: "People are in fact philo-Semitic in the government, mayors, to an extent which goes beyond pure electoral calculations" and "the one thing you can't say is that France is an anti-Semitic country." [159]
Self-fulfilling prophecy?

Hamilcarr, your survey isn't very scientific.
I know, but it remains a fact that I'm not getting in touch with this presumed antisemitism. 'Europe' is a too vague term.
Do you realize how large the US is?
The EU has 200 million inhabitants more. Generalizations never work. For the time being, I'm awaiting more clarification from the scientific front 'bout this rising antisemitism.

May I remind the Europeans that we recently elected a non-white President of Muslim ancestry. How many enlightened European nations can lay such a claim?
You know progressive Europeans admire the man.
Do you?

Continuation of my little poll: Reagan (once), Bush (twice), Republicans in general (once), deregulation (three times), no idea (five times), ceo's (two times), politics in general (two times).
No mention of Jews up to now. Maybe I should turn to my theist friends.

Do you feel unnerved by the "Global Financial Crisis"?
by Elsewhere inever have a moment where something stressed you out, then something else, then another thing, and then you remembered the "global financial crisis" and before you knew it your nerves were shot to hell???
i have found myself doing that over the last few weeks.
i end up having to spend a few hours talking myself down.. what is odd is that i know, statisically, we all have a very low chance of loosing our jobs.

They could have let the banks go bust and started again from scratch.
That would have meant the end of capitalism, indeed. But I think the political (plutocratic) elite has gotten so much addicted to das Kapital that there will be more of the same in the years of come. Maybe revolutions have become out of fashion.

Btw, it would be very interesting to compare the political preferences of the people who blame it on the Jews. As we know since the rehabilitation of the SSPX, it wouldn't surprise me if most antisemitic Europeans were catholic (or muslim ... theists, after all), right-winged conservatives. Double standards: a recurrent problem with conservatives, both in the US and EU.

I just asked three Europeans their opinion, not including myself or family. All three ascribed the crisis to bank mismanagement. They all shrugged when I told them American conservatives thought we blame it on the Jews.

I feel that we are witnessing no less than the end of capitalism.
Dunno. I'm afraid the US compromise stimulus package shows there's more continuity than might have been expected.

Rereading Russell --- The First-cause Argument
by hamilcarr inno, not ct but bertie.
while rereading some of his well-known works, i think his astute logical thinking remains relevant today:.
the first-cause argumentperhaps the simplest and easiest to understand is the argument of the first cause.

cameo-d. Indeed, the sovjet experiment was a secular continuation of the Gospel, showing its ideals were unattainable in the real world.
