Each book has the name of it's author-John, Mathew, etc.
From the research I've done, they don't always get those authors correct. The gospels weren't written by Matthew, Mark, Luke and John.
or just from everyday people like you and me and christians just held on to it because it gave them something to hope for and put faith in?.
if it really is from god, why are things still so mysterious, i.e.
why are we still in the dark about the future?

You'll probably find this show interesting, Linda.

well vinny and probably some others have come to wonder about the purpose of outspoken atheism, especially when it is presented in a rude manner.
here's my thoughts on the matter.. many of us here will have relatives who are jehovah's witnesses.
we want them to escape from that cult.
Carmel,
I find in your post history these comments, which I imagine would be seen as rude by any JW lurkers or people who don't know their teachings very well.
...and how would drinking the cool aid increase revenue in Crooklyn? carmel
the JWs who are all warm and fuzzy as long as you "go along".
Call me an absolutist, but frankly, the WBTS is so full of crap, you'd need a honey bucket the size of Texas to service it.
I think you'll find lots of parents just never stop parenting and JW parents have the additional pressure of thinking they have to "save" you from falling off the cliff that leads to distruction, blah, blah, b lah!
Do you have an unwarranted superiority complex too?
...would you please explain all these bones of human ancestors which have been found, which anyone can go to see in museums?.
thanks.. http://www.mnh.si.edu/anthro/humanorigins/ha/a_tree.html.
.
It disproves the Biblical god, who was supposed to have made humans as we see them today 6000 years ago.
If natural selection is the driving force, where does God come into it?
i have a question for everyone regarding your personal experience with the brainwashing techniques of the wt.
(its amazing that i can even say that now.
once was a time i would have bristled at the mere suggestion that the society brainwashes people.
I had doubts throughout childhood, but I didn't feel guilty about it. They were more doubts about god himself rather than the teachings of the society. I knew they would fall apart if God didn't exist.
One of my biggest problems with the beliefs was the Bible's view of homosexuals and women. Inside I knew it was morally wrong to treat these people any different to others, and if there was a god I couldn't see how his sense of morality was less 'evolved' than mine. I felt so right in my head that I just couldn't feel guilty about it, it was God who was wrong.
That and other doubts/feelings led me to believe that this god was a nasty piece of work and that I would die at Armageddon. But I would have rather died than live under the rule of such a morally inferior being who had to use threats to get people to worship him. I never 'loved' God, even when I thought he existed (thank you indoctrination!).
When I was old enough I did the research and discovered there was no reason to believe in a god, and that the fallback position- faith, is considered ridiculous when applied to anything else but God belief. I stayed consistent and applied it to Yahweh/Jehovah.
So did I have doubts? Absolutely. I was a very skeptical child. Did I have guilt? None whatsoever. Wanting everyone to be treated equally is nothing to be guilty about. I'm proud of feeling that way.

And god for a lot of people is something some poeple just NEED.
Yeah. Unfortunately they also NEED to lie to or keep their children ignorant of the facts of life.
So, any creationists want to explain what these bones are if not human ancestors? Or would you just like to continue lying to yourself and others?

Humans and apes share a common ancestor.
Get it yet?

JCanon-
Unfortunately, your god has only revealed himself (with actual words) to a select few. There is no reason for the rest of us to believe. We are open, yet God has not spoken to us. If God is real, he would know that I would use my brain and need more reason to believe in him over say, Thor. If Jesus comes out of the clouds like Superman and uses his magic powers to destroy us, I will feel set up. God would have wanted me to pick him over the 3000 other gods, with no reason for doing so. Talk about the odds being stacked against you! Of course, if we look back through history we can see that every generation for 2000 years has believed Jesus is going to come back in their lifetime. They worked at the numbers and came up with dates just around the corner from them, just as people today do.
Of course all that is my opinion, and the point of this thread is to say atheists have just as much right to give their opinion as the religious have to preach.
Auldsoul-
We should have equal time oppressing views because our views are elevated above and are intellectually superior to most religions.
I don't think we should oppress views. I don't mind any religious person preaching, just as long as they don't mind me giving my side. We should have equal time expressing views.
why do atheists try to change believers?
why do believers try to convert atheists?
why do we feel compelled to evangelize, proselyltize, convert, and change others politically, religiously, culturally, etc.?
I think trying to convert/deconvert others comes from our care for them. On both sides of the argument. A believer may genuinely think atheists will burn forever if they don't convert. Atheists may genuinely worry about the future of the planet and our species if people don't deconvert.
For the most part it should never be a forced change though. In some cases it has to be. Nazis who held the belief that their race was superior needed to be forced to abandon that belief.
In the last hundred years, if beliefs had not been spoken about openly, this would be the situation: Blacks wouldn't be able to marry whites or have equal rights, women wouldn't be allowed to vote and homosexuals would still be seen by most as living a bad life (we're still working on that last one with gay marriage still being held back). By stating our cases, the 'zeitgeist' changes. A species that doesn't change could die out.
