Hi,
I know several people had contacted the press about the United Nations scandal. I was wondering if any of you had heard back from any media types?

Any updates on media interest in this issue? I would be interested to know if there has been any luck in generating interest in the press. Sadly, I have nothing to report myself. I'll probably email LoneWolf soon to see if he's received any hits from the releases that were sent out.

MAJOR REQUEST ON THE WTS/UN SCANDAL
by hawkaw inhello all.. i was hoping a few of you would do me a favour.
a local news editor has asked me a question.
he has asked why is this un/wts story important to the local community?.

As for why it's important to witnesses, there are countless reasons and endless stories of emotional tragedy that this organization is responisble for. I guess I would also like to think about this in terms of why it's important to the newspaper considering running the article. I'm going to take that approach for the moment.
Why is this important enough for a newspaper to cover:
1) We've just seen the horror of religious fanaticism demonstrated on Sept. 11. Now that we've been touched by it on a massive scale, how does fanaticism touch our lives on a daily basis? Who does it affect? Are lives ruined or lost? Do we really need to ask why it matters after seeing the lengths people will go to so vividly on the 11th?2) The United Nations were made a mockery by the Watchtower. A little cult fleeces the UN. The United Nations is supposed to address human rights concerns. Unknowningly, they allowed a religious cult that routinely violates human rights to associate itself with them. Either the United Nations didn't do it's homework on this NGO or we've seen the underhanded nature of this cult at work. Either way, it's a scandal.
3)A grass roots effort quelled this sneaky cults efforts to take advantage of the United Nations. The seemingly powerless victims rose to the occasion and made an oppressive organization change it's ways.
More later...

Bible Error: How Did Judas Die?
by JosephAlward inmatthew says that judas hanged himself, while the writer in acts says that he fell and his guts spilled out.
both of these accounts cannot be true.
either one is, or neither is, and this means that the bible is not error-free.

Lin,
are you saying that Judah was pushed or thrown rather than fell? Following your thinking, it looks as if you are suggesting that a dead Judah was pushed or thrown or buried in a field that was bought in his name by some unmentioned third party.I'm not sure I understand how you come to the conclusion that what is written in acts is any more figurative than what was written in Matthew. I suppose I could argue that Judah was hung after he had fallen and his guts splattered by this unnamed third party. Or, Judah could have attempted to hang himself, only succeeded in winding himself, the branch broke but he survived only to fall into his field and die. Seems like conjecture to me. I have no problem with the fact that the bible contradicts itself and as a result I don't feel compelled to offer conjecture or explanation that simply doesn't exist in the bible to fill in the holes. I do, however, find it interesting when people reach for a plausible explanation where one doesn't exist. Are you uncomfortable with the idea that there may be some difficult passages to explain away or are you comfortable with that fact but are just offering up a few ideas for people to mull over? -

Media Dept London HQ - UN Letter
by Celtic inhawk was most helpful in supplying letter to the board here a day or so ago re: wtbts membership of dpi un.. i rang the media department in london today who said that they were well aware of the letter and its contents.. asked why the organisation seems to be in contradiction to its litureture the wt and awake, concerning the beast of revelation, i was told by the department that the society has never been affiliated to the un.
the only reason why they belonged to the dpi was to access their, (the un), library resources.. i asked if the comments (non-affiliation) could be sent to me via email.
i was told that that was not nessarsary as the un had already supplied information.

Go Mommy! Make 'em sweat!!
On another note, if Mr. Gillies letter was published (as is) in response to Mr. Bates' article, his immediate goals will be accomplished. I looked at that letter once. The first thing I noticed was how he said Mr. Bates' articles had some mistakes in it (I'm paraphrasing from memory). This will be the first thing witnesses latch on to. Innacuracies or Mistakes in the article. So, if Mr. Gillies letter is published as is, it will look as though Bates' article is riddled with mistakes. The fact that Mr. Gillies letter is riddled with mistakes, if not outright lies, will not be addressed in a letter to the editor type of forum. Bates would have to take him on in a written debate in order for Bates' counter-points to be heard.
I'm not familiar with the guardian, but I would be interested to see how they will make use of Gillies statements. A letter to the editor type reprint of Gillies letter would be very problematic as a direct response from Bates wouldn't usually be included in that sort of forum. However, if Bates' incorporates Gillies response into another article it could be quite helpful. In other words:
If letter from Gillies published in letter to editor forum: points go to gillies for scoring the last word(even though he's lying through his teeth).
If Bates takes him on in his column: points to Bates (cause Gillies is lying through his teeth).Does anyone know what sort of use Bates will have for this response letter? Will it appear as written in the paper?

Hi Catholic Guy,
Do you have any emails or websites for those papers? I don't have access to a fax so I've been emailing instead. I'd gladly send back up emails. I won't have time to look for those email addresses today so if you have them, that would help. Thanks for your help, by the way. -

Okay, I couldn't resist. I sent a release to The Kentucky New Era after reading Nic's posting of their free speech article. Likelihood that they'd turn around and confront the controversy after backing "free speech" witness-style? ...about zip! But I emailed it just for fun knowing that it would probably be disregarded.
This is the address I sent it to:

Hi,
I lightly revised my press release to reflect that both current and former members alike are troubled by the UN situation. Just so you know, I know of no newspaper that would publish a press release. Instead they'll assign somebody to research and write an article based on the interest ignited by press releases/calls/letters. I would like to encourage everyone to take Lone Wolf's advice and consider emailing/calling/faxing media outlets multiple times to see if we can conjure up a little interest in the issue. I have sent my release to the following outlets:Christian Science Monitor:
Send the release to " [email protected]" and direct it to the attention of David Cook, Editor

I think the squeaky wheel approach might be the best way to go. Please consider contacting these outlets. Also, I will send my release to a media outlet that you've contacted if you post the email address here.
We need to make a little noise if we want people to get interested.
Let's get the word out. Anybody willing to email/fax/call my sources?
thanks!
