Classical Composers & Movie Soundtracks
by dh ini love all kinds of music and mostly listen to classic fm when i drive in the uk, being away a lot i have to rely on my .mp3 collection most of the time, or tune in online.. anyway i recently discovered a composer by the name of ludovico einaudi and i think his music is absolutely awesome, listening to it is like learning to breathe again, it's beautiful.
anyway i like a few other composers of contemporary classical type music such as john williams who does mostly movie soundtracks and a few others, and i wondered if anyone else out there was really into any contemporary classical music, movie compositions or full on classical compositions or anything like that?.
who are your favourite composers and what are your favourite movie soundtracks?

always have to ask myself if the music is so strong on its own without the movie, that I can just listen to it as music and not think just of the film, that's why some soundtracks I take no pleasue in listening to without the movie being on, Star Wars & Indiana Jones are perfect examples!
That is true, but I think opera and ballet suffer from the same problem as well, IMHO.
That's why you will see "themes" and "suites" of these works, where you get the gist and main thematic elements that remind you of the feelings of the movie, ballet, whatever, without being stuck to matching the discreet segments to a particular moment in the movie.
One thing I have disliked about a lot of soundtrack albums is where they combine segments together to make a lengthier track, whether or not these pieces actually belong together in the same breath (The Star Wars albums are prime offenders in this regard.) It has only been recently that they have started to put the music in "event order", which makes for a less jarring musical experience.

"Bolero" will always remind me of a tank battle in the desert.
WTF? I can understand it reminding you of a naked Bo Derek, but a tank battle? Elaborate, please!

I used to really like Williams, because of Star Wars and Indiana Jones, but lately I've started to repent. His new stuff for SW has it's moments, but he's gotten into a rut musically. The other day, I was watching an old movie he scored, "Family Plot". The main theme was WAAAY overdone (lots of heavenly chorus, spectral swirls), and in the middle of the movie, I caught a "military motif" that was re-used note for note in "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" (if you know the movie, you know this music. It's the real stirring martial segment where the military is shipping out all the "mystery" equipment in disguised trucks.)
I liked a lot of stuff Jerry Goldsmith had done (Planet of the Apes, Alien). He died a couple of weeks ago. I actually got to shake his hand at a concert he conducted in my city many years ago.
Howard Shore's score for Lord of the Rings was just fabulous. My favorite score of recent years. He's come a long way since being the music director for Saturday Night Live.
Han Zimmer is good.
I used to like James Horner, but he repeats motifs too much. I can tell a Horner score by listening to it, because he falls back on too many easy tricks in his music.

Thunderbirds are go
by stillajwexelder ini went to see thunderbirds last night - i used to love thunderbirds when i was a kid and when i was an adult.
this film however left me a little dissappointed.
anyother film recently you have seen that left you feeling let-down?

I saw it with the kids this afternoon, and with my brother and my wife.
It was good for what it was. Thunderbirds was never that big over here in the US, so most people won't "get it" on my side of the pond.
I had trouble staying awake at the beginning, but darn it! I just came back from Chicago, and I was tired!
It was neat looking and gadgety, it would appeal to the "Spy Kids" fans if they tried to target them in the marketing.
Lady Penelope was quite fetching, sexy and no-nonsense, wrapped up in a pink package. Thought her pink Thunderbird (cute joke!) was the coolest vehicle in the bunch.
This movie should sell a lot of toys if it catches on

She diden't die, she was murdered. The Governing Body had her whacked for leaving!
You know, that really isn't all that funny. I remember listening to a taped interview she did at an assembly, and years later, I remember her as being a very funny, earth-bound person. If she walked away from anything, it was a career of being "Pamela Grier:Lite" for the blaxpoitation industry.
Caring people should not make light of tragic events.

When I die, I want it to be like my Grandfather, peacefully asleep.....
Not screaming and pounding on the automobile's windows like his passengers were doing.....

Prince will eventually go the way of micky splaine and the two detroit lions and "christy love" and others that once were dubbers and eventualy left.,
Okay, so when did "Christy Love" Teresa Graves leave the Witnesses? I knew she died in a fire a few years back, but I knew nothing about her leaving....

One UFO school of thought (not the Witnesses) is that there are actually two type of alien/UFO encounters. The beneficent contact types, and the evil experimenter/probe up the butt type. These two groups are in conflict, and we humans are caught in the middle of the struggle. Early human encounters were interpreted as contact with supernatural beings, hence our "angels/demons" lore and legend.
Actually does kinda sound about 2 and a half steps different than the WTS doctrine of humans in the middle of a Universal issue involving God's right to rule being challenged by Satan.
Myself, I believe that if there is Alien intelligence out there, it would remain intelligent only if it refrains contact with Earth humanity.....
