  I haven't got any solid evidence as to the 90% who lose their papers at this time only what various ministers have said.

  May I say something about Jeffro claiming the that traditionally 90% of boat people being genuine refugees.

  Firstly the 90% referred to are refugees that were given the benefiof the doubt without papers by the Labour party.

  May I suggest most of these so called refugees are liars.

  I read a book by Ayaan Hirsi Ali called Infidel . Ayaan is a muslin women from Somarlia who was sent to Canada to marry her cousin. She travelled to Germany and then to Holland where she applied for asylum but she was instructed to tell a lie to get refugee status. Ayaan later went to university joined a political party and was voted into the Duch Parliment. She had worked with muslims as an interpretor and was very good assett to the muslim community in Holland. During her time in parliment Ayaan claimed she had lied to receive refugee status and was sacked from parliment for a time. Ayaan also made the claim from her experiance working as a translator 99% of muslims claiming refugee status in Europe lie to gain that status and Europe has the same requirements as Australia no papers are required only your word.

  Ayaan later was recieved back into parliment and actually her citizenship was also cancelled. The information can be found in the book Infidel.

  From the above post it can be seen that crossing the sea in a leaky boat doesn't a refugee make. In fact we have been using the more broad interpretation such as war civil strife, domestic violence, poverty and natural or man made disasters.

  An economic refugee is certainly excluded from the above definition.

  1. Who is a refugee?

  According to the United Nations Convention and Protocol relating to the Status of Refugees (also called the Refugee Convention), a refugee is someone who is outside their own country and cannot return due to a well-founded fear of persecution because of their:

  • race
  • religion
  • nationality
  • membership of a particular social group or
  • political opinion1

  A person becomes a refugee under international law once she or he crosses an international border and is assessed as meeting the definition of a refugee, either by a national government or an international agency such as the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).http://www.unhcr.ch/cgi-bin/texis/vtx/home

  In popular use, the term refugee is often interpreted more broadly than its legal definition to include all people who flee their homes seeking refuge from harm. However, the Refugee Convention only recognises people as refugees if they are displaced from their home country because of persecution on the basis of their race, religion, nationality, membership of a particular social group or political opinion.

  Two important points to note about this definition are:

  • a person has to be outside their country of nationality or usual residence when making a refugee application; and
  • the fear of persecution has to be well founded - that is, the person fleeing must have experienced the persecution or be likely to experience it if he or she returns.

  Ok I should have spelt it status sorry.

  Those are not my opinions they are the requirements in my own words of the UNHCR [ United Nations High Commission of Refugees] if you read my earlier post I have a lawyer friend that wrote into Australian law the requirements to meet the United Nations standard which is actually more generous to asylum seekers than is required under the UNHCR ruleing.

  Even the Jewish minority in Iran is not persecuted they have a Jewish person in government at this time which is a permanent position and under UNHCR women are not refugees just because you say so, even though they are treated as second class according to our standards.

  I believe there a a few misconceptions as to who should be classified as a refugee.

  Refugees are not people that travel to another country for a better life If that was the case most people in poorer countries could claim refugee statis and come to Australia such as most of

  China

  Refugees are required to report to the first country of safety they reach and register as a refugee and be assessed as to their statis.

  Refugees do not have vast amounts of money under the UNHCR this would raise some concern as to their statis.

  Refugees are usually from wartorn areas such as the Asaras from Afganistan and shouldn't be sent back the people from Iran are not refugees as a rule as there is no conflict there.

  I went to a Lutheran church last week

  we were on holidays and while my sister in law took my son to her church the catholic church i felt i would prefer my regular church the anglican one.

  when we arrived to the site of the church we realised it was a lutherine church.

  i decided to go there anyway.

When we arrived to the site of the church we realised it was a Lutherine church. I decided to go there anyway. The service was very traditional and even though I resisted somewhat the deakon insisted I take communion with them. I have read they have a belief in the presents of our lord Jesus in the bread called consubstanciation and because of this they may be more strict.

  I have allways thought of the Lutherans as being at the forefront of the reformation and even the witness books I believe have them coloured in favourable light If I remember correctly. Barry

  Jeffro, There is no hint of any racist scare-mongering at all in that video.

  What the video did show is that most Iranians have flown to Indonesia to board a boat to Australia or else how did they get there?

  These are middle class economic refugees which means they aren't refugees at all proven by the fact they had papers from the UNHCR that rejected their claim of refugee statis.

  The family interviewed paid 24000 dollars to people smugglers.

  I would like to see more interviews with people in camps that don't have 24000 dollars to pay to people smugglers.

  The people in the area were mostly from Iran. I believe the last war was over 30 years ago in that part of the world.
