whoa...i just had a thought. if they were real, they would outnumber the living by billions and billions (at least if we're talking about ghosts...if we're focusing more on demons, who knows how many there could be). of course, maybe not every corpse leaves a ghost, maybe only the tormented or something? in any case, there would be a lot of them. if they had the ability to affect our physical realm in any way, why wouldn't they start a revolution?...take their old physical world back from the living. how would we combat it? we couldn't. we'd be dead in the water... if there are ghosts and all they can do is turn on a friggin ceiling fan and spell words one letter at a time, i say, f*ck em. bring it on, punks.

not believing in god(s) is not the same thing as believing that there is no god(s). (the 2 ideas sound very similar but read it closely, they are worlds apart.) atheism implies lack of belief not knowledge of a negative.
an atheist does not believe in god, a theist does...neither KNOWS either way. it's a logical fallacy to criticize an atheist's belief which in fact they do not hold.
just want to share some thoughts...... as i read in another thread, there are only a few factors needed to have an evolutionary process.. copying, survival mechanism and some kind of random or prseudom random changes (mutations).. if we think of the image that people had of god or gods, this is applicable.
copying by stories, writing and traditions.
changes are obvious and the survival mechanism is also present as the way in which the view of god was most powerfull, believable etc.. anyway how did it evolve?.
the study of memetics (memes) was kind of popularized by richard dawkins.

"kind of popularized"? he invented the term! i read an interview with him not too long ago and he actually seemed kind of embarrased about it. he said that when he brought up the concept (in Selfish Gene) he was just trying make a metaphor, not invent a new field of study. so it goes, i guess.

your boss reminded me of my girlfriend (until you clarified). lately for some reason she's started clapping and cheering real loud whenever i do some stupid mundane thing. (i'll take out the trash or make a sandwich and when i get done she'll get right in my face and start clapping and cheering and shouting "AWESOME WORK! GREAT JOB! WAY TO GO!") i have no idea why she does it but i laugh everytime. now she won't stop. she's a moron.
