WTF with that lawsuit in the article above. Society has jumped the shark. Okay, that probably occurred a long time ago but suing in behalf of people that aren't here, aren't citizens, etc. preemptively is nuts. So much of the reactions are simply emotion and the left seems to see things more and more through some utopian lens where money and resources aren't an actual thing. It's bizzaro world right now.

Asylum Caravan
by dubstepped inalright, so what is the deal with the thousands coming to the states right at election time seeking asylum?
i'm not up on this, usually try not to be, but how can this not be manipulative?
it's either manipulative in the size of the group and pressure that creates, or in where it started or who started this, etc.

Interesting post truth_b_known. Some of those things are the types of information I was looking for but didn't even think to look for.

I tend to look at things in a utilitarian way. It seems like thousands of immigrants coming at once would take a lot of resources to process, house, feed, care for their health, etc. with little in return. Some seem to see the US as the Jesus of the world, the savior that can cure all of the ills, while at the same time demonizing the country. It's a weird dichotomy.
If we have to take in all of these people, how many more will come? Can our society handle all of that financially? What about integrating all of these people in, finding them work and schools and such?
Compassion is a beautiful thing. Taken too far it becomes codependency, which is unhealthy.
I look around at all of the problems we have taking care of our own. If my family struggles and you bring me a pack of kids to adopt, adoption being a noble thing in theory, it could be disastrous.
I know as a white male I'm the devil to some just like immigrants are the devil to others, but all of that is bullshit to me and secondary to the utility of all of this, the practicality. Where does it stop? Why have borders become so evil in our culture? Boundaries can be a very healthy thing. I guess I just feel like we need to work on ourselves as a country before we take in others.

I did kind of wonder what they needed asylum from, if it was some sort of war or genocide or something. It sounds like it's more personal preference, wanting to live where it's better. I can understand that, but if too many people do that it's no longer better, or so it would seem.
When it comes to people that are born here, it seems like they should get to stay. I'm not sure I agree with sending them back to a country they have no relationship with.
That whole minuteman situation sounds like a bunch of people just looking for a fight. That doesn't sound like a good idea.
I'm still left wondering where this caravan started, what or who was behind its formation. It still seems curious to me.

I believe Captain Schmideo is shunning us for having differing beliefs or maybe me for asking questions. Interesting. Emotion gets so highly tied up in this stuff. I would rather have heard his side, presented in a logical manner, as that's why I started the thread asking questions. To me this all seems strange. I've never heard of these caravans before and the timing seems interesting. Maybe the media coverage is all that's really different.
I don't know, but it would be interesting to hear from a more liberal view what this is all about without people shutting down or just poo-pooing a discussion of it. If you don't like it, bring some well thought out balance to the discussion.

@thegirlnextdoor - Interesting to know that these caravans have happened for decades. What is the usual response? Let them all in, turn them away, something else?

@Simon - Lol at that interview. Watch what you ask.
To be fair, Sir82 says they can't reach the border in time. I did see that they have had issues slowing them down from the Mexican government to kids getting lost to issues between people in the group. Maybe they won't get to the border on time but it still seems stunt-y (is that a word).
I don't usually post political stuff but enjoy reading. I like to stay somewhat ignorant and then ask questions that are sincere and see where things go and learn along the way, research things off of that, etc.

Okay, I didn't know how far away they were which is why I'm asking. But do you not think that it's already causing a stir that is causing a response that is impacting people that vote? I'm already seeing things on social media and people using it as a tool to promote their views and their side. You need not be knocking on the door to make a point, right?

Alright, so what is the deal with the thousands coming to the States right at election time seeking asylum? I'm not up on this, usually try not to be, but how can this not be manipulative? It's either manipulative in the size of the group and pressure that creates, or in where it started or who started this, etc. This is just too weird. I just read an article where they were essentially offered asylum, jobs, education, etc. in Mexico but of course they turned that down.
Is this just a political stunt? If so that's disgusting, exploiting people for political gain. Or is this another country trying to interfere in our elections? Or Democrats? Is it somehow Republicans (not sure how that would work)?
Any insights on this, opinions, or general discussion? I don't remember seeing this talked about and I may be early as the caravan is still a bit away from here, but what's up with it? I'd be interested to hear people's views instead of emotional memes on Facebook.

@Scenic Viewer - Yep, looks like Fifth to me. I don't know anyone else but I don't watch a lot of Youtube videos. Most that I've actually watched are from him. Nice to see him on the panel.
