i am not looking to debate creation or evolution.
i just wanted to get some ideas from people on whats going to happen in the future.
my sister married a muslim, and they are strictly intelligent design creationists i believe, corect me if i am wrong.
I agree that we are going through some growing pains related to the information age. It is painful to have one's belief system overturned, so when new evidence comes forward, invariably there will be groups of people who band together and declare that they will never change.
Generally speaking, I believe that most humans will tend to choose the reasonable explanation, even when under mild pressure to conform to the traditional view. That is, I believe that our desire to be reasonable is slightly stronger than our desire to uphold the status quo. What this means is that, over the long term, the reasonable explanations will tend to gain wide approval. Eventually, when the reasonable explanations are also the traditional views, reason will have triumphed for good.

hello fellow geeks,.
i have a question regarding visibility of devices inside a network behind a router running network address translation.
i have a router providing internet access to several machines / devices on a private (192.168) network in my house.
Thanks guys! You're the greatest.
Yes, I am using basic authentication anyway, but I just wanted to know for knowledge's sake. Also, I might create one unprotected shared directory, that contains nothing but encrypted files. But I wondered whether it would be theoretically possible to see the directory structure, etc.
Anyway, that's for the clarification!

Hello fellow geeks,
I have a question regarding visibility of devices inside a network behind a router running network address translation. I have a router providing internet access to several machines / devices on a private (192.168) network in my house. My question is, are these devices completely invisible to outside requests? It seems like they would have to be, since it would not be possible to route a packet from the outside using the IP address of a device inside the network. But the router is visible from the outside, so is it possible to trick the router into forwarding packets to devices on the private network?
The main reason I'm asking is that I recently bought a network attached storage device for my office. Having a 160GB shared drive on the network makes life a lot easier for me when I'm working with my graphic designer. Windows sees the drive as a network share, and it is possible to put basic security on the shared folders. My question is: is it necessary? Is it even remotely possible for someone outside of my network to connect to - or even see - this device?

Chicky,
Jehovah will resurrect me and I will want for nothing.
Just keep telling yourself that, buddy. If you say it enough times, it makes it true!
Why don't you sit down, take a deep breath, and engage in some discussion here? That's what the board is for. Discussion, not sermons.

a few days ago i had the privilege of being invited to a regular pioneer's birthday party.
i met her a couple of weeks ago, and even though she knows i am inactive and have serious doubts, we hit it off on a social level.
so that's why i was invited... .
I also know several Witnesses that celebrate birthdays at some level. I remember a few months before I left, one girl even invited me to a party, blatantly calling it "So-and-so's birthday party." Of course, at the time I was mortified. But now I think it's great that people are just up and deciding not to listen to the GB and their stupid rules. It's like a silent revolution.

wanted to write another topic entirely, but after quite some thinking i thought that one particular topic should be addressed.
especially, for people still feeling confused.
we often wonder why so many dubs looks like zombies, why it is hard to make them see the real truth about the truth, why cant they discuss any topic in depth without resorting to reasoning book or other wtbs literature, why it is that they are so easily manipulated, why it is that they are filled with apostate state of mind fears (fearing to question anything), why, why, why?
Just wanted to say great thread, zagor.
When I got out of the organization and starting really studying things that I was interested in (mainly science, and a bit of history and philosophy), I was totally blown away by the depth of actual knowledge out there, just waiting to be had. It was like moving from a puddle to the ocean.

Ay yai yai, the terrible intellectual mire in which the creationists slog about!
Nice comments, tetra. To anyone who skipped it because it was so long, it's definitely worth a read.

greendawn,
The issue of intermediary fossils has already been dealt with adequately by the posters above, but I wanted to say something about evidence and lack thereof.
It is important to realize that lack of evidence for one possibility never becomes evidence for another. Evolution and creation are perceived as two competing theories. However, if you find the evidence for evolution lacking, that does not amount to evidence for creation. The actual explanation could be something totally different from either possibility. Only positive evidence weighs toward any particular explanation.
Consider another scenario. Let's say a murder is being investigated. The police believe that the killer used either a knife or a gun to do his dastardly deed. However, no shell casing has been found. Does that amount to evidence for the knife theory? No. It simply means that the gun theory has a problem. The knife theory does not get any stronger by this lack of evidence on the other side. Why? Because an explanation is strong only when it has evidence weighing directly in support of it, not when its neighbors experience a lack of evidence. In the case of the murder, the actual weapon might be a pipe or a rope or a pair of hands.
In the case of evolution, sometimes a perceived lack of evidence is actually just a lack of knowledge of the evidence. If you haven't yet had the chance, I would heartily recommend the above-mentioned talkorigins.org site. Their FAQ is a great place to start.
Hope that helps!
