  He's spent most of the last 10-15 years putting himself out there on the web and social media as a self-proclaimed 'leading' exJW 'activist' but now he just seems to prefer trundling along in his own slow lane. Side-lined and irrelevant - any person who makes it their life's purpose to criticise the WT will eventually become irrelevant sooner or later.

  Customers being frozen out of their bank accounts for political views is a very worrying trend ...

  yeah, so i know nigel farage is a bit of an abrasive twat.. he no doubt holds views that other people disagree with.. but that doesn't mean his bank can just tell him to sod off and freeze his accounts.. such a thing might go on in commie china or authoritarian russia.

  no doubt hitler closed lots of jewish people's accounts in nazi germany, too.. but the fact that it is happening here, in the yew-kay, is pretty chilling when you consider this country is supposed to champion freedoms, including the one to hold and express varying political views.. this seems to be part of a trend to delegitimise and cancel people who hold certain views.. i remember looking at a yt video of richard dawkins questioning muslim journalist mehdi hassan about his belief in flying horses and muhammad.

  all fair analysis and criticism by dawkins until he suggested that hassan shouldn't be a journalist because of his beliefs.

  Coutts are a very exclusive bank for the very rich and it is not for the likes of you and me. They select their customers - well, putting to one side the fact that other, less exclusive banks have done similar, isn't accepting/rejecting customers on the basis of their political opinions a rather arbitrary way to proceed?

  And if banks wish to go down this route, shouldn't they make their 'values' publicly known so customers can pick the right banks for them?

  Myself, I'm having a hard time taking seriously the fact that banks have values. To me, banks are greedy amoral scum, but what would I know ...

  I remember looking at a YT video of Richard Dawkins questioning Muslim journalist Mehdi Hassan about his belief in flying horses and Muhammad. All fair analysis and criticism by Dawkins until he suggested that Hassan shouldn't be a journalist because of his beliefs. I don't like Mehdi Hassan but re journalism, he must be judged on his abilities as a journalist, and not on his religious/personal beliefs.

  Like I said, Farage probably isn't a lot of people's cup of tea. But he should be allowed to maintain an account with the bank of his choice, regardless of his political views. Just imagine if a bank had frozen Nicola Sturgeon's account because she was pro-independence ... that would be outrageous, and plenty of Scotch Nuts would be out in force, protesting against oppression and the rest of it.

  The only good thing that came out of this affair was the Head Banker (Dame Alison Rose), who briefed a BBC journalist about Farage and lied about why the bank got rid of him, had to resign herself.

  Do you think other banks will learn this lesson?

  Did anyone really enjoy assemblies?

  the twickenham post made me think of this.

  i have a few jw family members on facebook and being summertime, their pics of the convention have shown up in my fb feed.

  along with their comments about "i wished it would never end" or "what a glorious weekend".

  Did I enjoy assemblies/conventions?

  No I didn't - even when I was 'in'.

  The moderate ones were typically as dull as dishwater.

  And TBH, I didn't really get all the excitement over new releases. We already had The Truth (TM) so what was so great about another book?

  One or two of the other assemblies were frankly disturbing ('we're sooo close to the end, and all not associated with True Worship will be destroyed by Jehovah very soon').

  what if a witness doesn't believe some of the official teachings of the governing body but remains silent on these subjects to avoid being disfellowshipped?

  a silly question since i'm an atheist but one i thought of as a kid jw.

  why weren't human's created to be obviously different from animals?

  among believers there is some sort of universal hierarchy.

  But it's kinda understandable for religious people to think like that, even if we're not 'obviously different'.

  Lots of people think like that, and they're not necessarily religious.

  Take our laws on murder. Murder is the unlawful, intentional killing of one human being by another. Animals (non-human species) cannot be murdered even if they are sometimes killed by humans illegally. Murder can only apply to humans.

  The minute animal rights activists start to include animals or start to think that humans and animals should be viewed as equals, a whole load of moral and philosophical issues crop up.

  Scotland is under 10% of the population of UK. Whereas the UK was more than 10% of the population of the EU - but this is a moot point because the EU survives the UK leaving it. By your own admission Scotland leaving the UK automatically breaks it up.

  #1 - Scotland leaving the UK, and the UK leaving the EU are two completely different things.

  #2 - five million Scots should not be allowed to break up the UK - the whole of the UK electorate should vote on it.

  LoveUni: that's an interesting viewpoint, though don't you think it's the equivalent of saying, 'We don't need another general election because we voted for the Tories in 2010'?? - no, because general elections happen every 5 years, whereas once-in-a-generation referendums don't. C'mon, it's not difficult to distinguish between the two.

  Incidentally. Scottish independence is absolutely not anti-English - this may be correct, but you seem to be using it to cover over anti-English bigotry, which does exist, and seems to be particularly popular with some SNP supporters.

  And neither you nor Slim have properly engaged with the point I made earlier: five million Scots must not be allowed to break up the UK. If the fate of the UK is going to be decided, then the whole of the UK electorate must vote on it.

  ... is absolutely ridiculous.. last year, 2022, russian and belorussian tennis players were banned from wimbledon.

  let that just sink in.

  if you were a pro tennis player, and happened to be a russian or belorussian citizen, the all england club decided that you could not compete at their annual grass tournament.. let's explore that particular brand of discrimination and lunacy further.

  But, a part of me kinda wants a female Russian or Belorussian player to win the Ladies' Singles Final.

  It would be hilarious watching the British media and Wimbledon trying to deal with that, lol.
