The Fly (1986) - David Cronenberg's masterpiece
by LoveUniHateExams ini first saw this film when i was 11. i'm not gonna lie, the prosthetic make up on jeff goldblum used when he was becoming a fly/man mashup kinda scared me.. it's a film that i own and have seen many times.
out of all the cronenberg films i've seen, this one definitely stands out for me.
i think it's cronenberg's masterpiece.. the plot is as follows: scientist seth brundle is trying to make teleportation possible, and meets a female journalist (ronnie quaife) who is keen to get the scoop.

"Scanners" is another good one of his - yes, it's a good moive.
I also like Videodrome. The fact that it features video cassettes so prominently kinda dates it but it's still good.

The State of the Labour Party
by LoveUniHateExams inso, we've recently had local elections across the uk on may 6.. mayoral elections, elections for councillors, and the hartlepool by-election.. labour did pretty well in wales, the snp did well in scotland, and the conservatives killed it in england.. hartlepool, a city that's been labour for 50 years, voted in the tory candidate.
hartlepool voted for brexit in 2016 (70%) and the labour leader, keir starmer, thought it was wise to offer up a labour candidate who is a kent-born remainer.
labour has seriously lost touch with its voter base, that base being traditional working class people.. it is now a party for students, social activists and the perpetually-offended, and trendy self-hating middle class people.. labour will continue to get its ass handed to it in elections until it actually starts listening to ordinary people, the voters.. and ordinary people aren't interested in woke nonsense such as preferred pronouns or taking the knee.. there has been much labour naval-gazing recently following the elections but i'd be surprised if anything is learned.

It's a film that I own and have seen many times. Out of all the Cronenberg films I've seen, this one definitely stands out for me. I think it's Cronenberg's masterpiece.
The plot is as follows: scientist Seth Brundle is trying to make teleportation possible, and meets a female journalist (Ronnie Quaife) who is keen to get the scoop. They fall in love when Brundle agrees to let her document his work. A fly gets in one of the teleportation pods as Brundle is trying to become the first human to be teleported. Brundle and fly get fused at the genetic level ('BrundleFly') and the scientist gradually changes physically and mentally, with horrific results.
Cronenberg initially trained as a doctor before dropping out of his medicine degree to pursue his passion of film making. A lot of Cronenberg's early films have body horror in them, and The Fly (1986) is no different. I haven't seen the original Fly film (the 50s one) but this 80s remake/reimagining gave Cronenberg a chance to take the body horror to the next level.
Several scenes stand out: particularly the arm wrestle scene, and the confrontation between a degraded Brundle and editor Stathis Borans (Ronnie's boss), with Brundle vomiting powerful enzymes on parts of Borans's body, similar to the feeding mechanism of flies.
The acting of Goldblum (Brundle) and Geena Davies (Ronnie) is fantastic. They really sell you the idea of a young couple in love because, well, at the time they were a young real life couple.
I highly recommend this film. You'll need a strong stomach to watch it, but it's great.

It is true, of course, that the Palestinians never had an independent country. For 400 years (1517-1917) Palestine was under the rule of the Ottoman Empire. Prior to that, it was always under the rule of some other Middle East power - yes, this was basically my point.
When pro-Palestinian people talk about 'occupation', I agree when they're referring to Israel's audacious land grabs in the West Bank (stealing Palestinian land). Trouble is, the same people also talk about 'occupation' when referring to the existence of Israel as a legitimate country, with the implication that the entire state of Israel is one big land grab from Palestinians. And this is not true, because Palestinians never had an independent country of their own.

Do you still debate with JWs?

not been out as long as i have.. cut a long story short, i came to realise that i can no longer be bothered to debate jws if (on the rare occasion), i have encountered them.. i think that because i am somewhere circling a nihilistic atheist it seems pointless.
i just don't have the energy because i rarely even think about jw related garbage.

They don't value independent thinking. The Governing Body writes all their lines.
I've never tried to debate them and I don't feel the need to, TBH.
I think pointing them towards the ARC (child abuse issues) might be better.

I hate wearing masks. June 21 is 'Freedom Day' and I'll not be wearing a mask from that point.
If Boris f**ks up, gives in to fear, and extends mask-wearing, I might indulge in civil disobedience. I'm quite poor, so I haven't made my mind up about this.
But, there will be plenty of people getting into mass civil disobedience. We have vaccines, so now we should be getting back to normal life.
