Although time is rapidly running out (has run out? - the 'generation' change bought a little time) for the 1914 teaching, it will be difficult to ditch this date without having to drastically re-jig the 'fulfilment' of prophecy about the 1919 'appointment of the faithful slave' doctrine. The two ideas are glued together. I don't believe the r&f can stomach a revolutionary upheaval on that just yet.

2005 New Release - What Does The Bible Really Teach?
by ezekiel3 inwhat is god like?
but many people seem to stop asking questions, especially the most important ones.
these are some of the most important questions you can ask.

I only had a cursory glance at someone else's book, but I did notice that the normal partnership of Christmas and birthdays wasn't there. Yes, Christmas was discussed and prohibited as usual, but I didn't see anything on birthdays. Can anybody confirm that or otherwise?

Flood help in reasoning book.
by bother_forever inwhen going door to door at a young age, the topic concerning the flood would from time to time arise, when i first encountered this topic with a "knowledgeable" householder i knew i needed fire power and fast.
it was when opening the "reasoning on the scriptures" book that i knew i would find something to not only amaze the householder with a fact that could not be argued with, but i would re affirm my faith and be happy, etc etc.
there was nothing, no flood heading, after pointing this out to a few bro&sis that our main weapon in the field seemed to lack some fire power in this subject i was told that it was not a neccessary subject for the society to have it in such a book.

A better question is, what evidence is there that it was global? The answer to that is, there is none. Not even in the pages of the Bible.
Exactly, Robert V! That's why it staggered me that on p. 22 of the 'Watch' brochure it stated, "Was There Really a Global Flood? Many critics say No. But the Bible says Yes."
Where?

The facts on crucifixion, stauros, and the "torture stake"
by Leolaia infinally, i will look at biblical and patristic evidence bearing on the crucifixion of jesus in particular.
we need to examine the earliest known descriptions of the kind of crucifixion adopted by the romans and the specific terms they used to refer to it.
apparently the society believes that crux still meant "stake" in the second century a.d., when tacitus composed his annals.

Hi Leolaia
Yes! Hislop deserves a thorough debunking as well. I have posted on this subject on the past, and I know there is a book out there as well exposing his errors, but someday it might be worthwhile to post a thread on Hislop.
Yeah well you'd be the gal to do it! I got the information from here about a proponent of Hislop - who had written another popular book supporting him - who more recently published a book exposing Hislop's painfully shoddy scholarship. I can't remember the website. An eye-opener. And the tragedy is, that only last week a real sweet JW lady said in front of everyone that she was reading 'The Two Babylons' (it sounded like it was for the first time) and with conviction in her voice told us a couple of highlights. I didn't have the heart ... maybe one day ...

Hi Eu
We had a couple of 20-something Bethelites who would give those talks; they were actually really cool guys when they weren't on stage.
Ack! And they owned masses of the 'questionable' albums themselves and never named band names on stage?
Hi freedom96
I was not allowed to get Fleetwood Mac due to their drug problems. ; Billy Joel was rebelious. ; "The Pirate Movie" soundtrack had a lot of songs sung by or about pirates. ; I had to break my Styx album that had supposed backward masking.
What! Poor you! A brother gave me a Fleetwood Mac album, my mom bought Billy Joel, and Styx were totally harmless, weren't they??? -

Wow Leolaia. What a fantastic article. I'm going to save it.
Wouldn't it be fair to say that a great influence on Rutherford's rejection of the cross was the very popular (and largely fanciful) "Two Babylons?"

Did any talks make me toss out my debasing albums? Hell NOOO! I was fortunate that I had relatively liberal parents, a stubborn streak, a JW boyfriend, himself with unconventional musical tastes, and 'weak brothers' who lent me their Led Zepp, Dire Straits, T-Rex, and Queen albums. Although I was tempted to buy my own Led Zepp copies many times, I never felt courageous enough to do it. About the mid/late 80s I got another brother I knew to tape them for me. I still have them somewhere ...
Usually, it was woefully apparent that the one giving talks about 'debasing music' had little or no clue about these bands other than the half-truths the sensationalist media had put about them. And it would often be a middle-aged or elderly guy who gave these talks who thought civilization had ended when Elvis the Pelvis appeared on the Hit Parade! So anything loud with screaming guitar was unthinkingly dissed.

Hi KK
Yes I have read 'Oranges' - didnt it just sound exactly like every small town book study group you have ever been to. It was reading stuff like that which made me realise we are not the only religion in the world, and that all the issue and agonies were the same for thinking people in any religion.
Exactly! Hat pins, thick tweed coats, sour attitudes and making a 'joyful' noise unto the Lord.

Hey katiekitten, you have one helluva talent for writing. I'm in stitches. Did you ever see/read 'Oranges Are Not The Only Fruit?'
