I really liked 'Who Wrote the Bible?' by Richard Elliott Friedman.

The most helpful book I have read since my exit is New Believers by David V. Barrett. This book looks at the phenomenon of new religions like Jehovah’s Witnesses and describes why they work etc. It does this in a balanced way, noting good points as well as the negative and without any ulterior religious agenda.
It also has a excellent reference section detailing the history and beliefs of most of the movements that come under the umbrella of alternative religions.

Another vote for Who Wrote the Bible? by Friedman.

Also, The Truth Book: Escaping a Childhood of Abuse Among Jehovah's Witnesses by Joy Castro (I just read it; it's great).

Along those lines, but about the Mormons: Leaving the Saints: How I Lost the Mormons and Found My Faith by Martha Beck.

Fiction, but interesting: By Way of Water by Charlotte Gullick.
