Concerning the wearing of "cross and crown pins," Lily R. Parnell comments: "This to Brother Rutherford’s mind was Babylonish and should be discontinued. He told us that when we went to the people’s homes and began to talk, that was the witness in itself." Accordingly, reflecting on the 1928 Bible Students convention in Detroit, Michigan, Brother Suiter writes: "At the assembly the cross and crown emblems were shown to be not only unnecessary but objectionable. So we discarded these items of jewelry." Some three years thereafter, beginning with its issue of October 15, 1931, The Watchtower no longer bore the cross and crown symbol on its cover.

And of course, those that ordered a crown/cross, pin-emblem from the Society were obliged to pay for the pennant they ordered from the Society; most folks prepaid! The “sister” who studied with my mom and me, told me that they had a garbage can next to the literature counter, and when they received their emblem, crown/cross, they were instructed to throw it in the garbage! Of course some, like this “sister,” did not do this but kept it! She was very proud of it and other prior emblems she had collected! It was very interesting to see!

That is incredible!

Thanx for that quote - how incredible that they took three years after the convention to get it off the magazine cover! The brothers and sis's that had to throw away the pin must have wondered when that double standard would end - didn't know that fact. Thanx

Interesting story.
Since this was so 'objectionable' by 1928, I wonder how Jehovah's Holy Spirit ever directed them to use the symbol to start with?

Obviously, they didn't have to throw the pre-1931 WTS away.
