I don't have the mag with me but I am fairly sure its the October 1 in the 2nd study article. Gives the same old reasoning they used to dish out i.e. bad associations, promiscuity, drug and alcohol use, and essentially it is a waste of time. Anyone else read this article? What did you think of it?
New October 1 WT thoroughly, but ambiguously discourages college

i read it. I saw that they usd the term HIGHER Education as to mean something different from Getting a college diploma. Again it is not discouraging getting a trade it is discourage the amount of time one would spend on Education.

This is where it is ambiguous. Who determines how much time is TOO MUCH? This is opening the door for JW's to start critisizing other JW's for deciding to get educated and get a real job like they did back in the 70's and 80's.
In all honesty though I think many will still go anyway because the WT is not as influential as it once was. When I graduated from HS way back when you did not go to college you either pioneered or got married and had kids. This article is obviously the follow up to that "wonderful scriptural" drama about Timothy this past summer...... what a bunch of crap.

What is a "college diploma"? Is this a highschool diploma?
What's the Society's view on Community Colleges? They are 2 year "degree" courses for anyone not familiar with the US educational system.
A lot of community college degrees can TRANSFER to University, so the student becomes a Junior at University instead of a Freshman.
University Years
------------------------
Year 1 - Freshman (18)
Year 2- Sophomore (19)
Year 3 - Junior (20) Community College graduates can transfer to the Junior Year of university.
Year 4 - Senior (21)
A Master's degree is usually 1 year in duration.
By contrast, a university degree in the UK is only 3 years, but 4 years if you opt to do the teacher training course.

A college diploma is generally 4 yrs here though you can get an associate's degree in 2. I think the point of tha article is to change the view that many JW's started taking after they seemed to ease up on higher education circa mid 90's. Many went to college after that and many adults went back to college (the smart ones) so that they could get better jobs. I think it will be a fruitless effort though because many people will still pursue higher education.

Of course, trades such as plumbers, electricians, carpenters don't take as much time.
Apprentices complete a minimum of 8,000 hours of on-the-job training during this five-year program

Well that is not surprising. But realistically loving parents should decide what is best for their young ones based on knowledge of their child's strengths and weaknesses are. Living at home and attending junior college while insisting on meeting attendance and participation is one way witness parents can meet a happy medium and monitor their childs progress in higher education. If responsiblity is manifest and a career begins to blossom then it is a private family matter. One young ministerial servant in my old hall grew up a JW and graduated from college. He is exceptionally serious and spiritually minded and so married and got a great job in Silicone Valley. At 30 became and elder and bought a home and now has a family. I asked him about his college days. He said his parents saw his responsible nature and his keen mental abilities and judged that college would not take him away from the truth. They were right.
I understand the mentality to keep youth safe from godless influences. When life is all said and done a happy family life and relationship with God does not make for a bad life. To be cautious in the great big world is good advice. But to deny or apply peer pressure to youths not to take advantage of education that will aid them in being better providers and homeowners someday is just wrong and unbalanced.
As an example many of us who heeded the advice of the society are completely unprepared to feed, house and clothe ourselves in this world. Minimum wage does not pay for rent, food, autos and gas these days. -

There's no need for a "higher" education.
When you read the Awake regularly then you have the equivalence of a college education.
Which college I don't know. I bet some of you can come up with a proper name. lol
