1 of 3 different listed subjects in Mercury News/ Scroll down to 2nd listing.

First it was information technology, public works, the clerk's office, planning and then finance. Last week, it was the Jehovah's Witnesses' turn to move to the new City Hall.

After years of offering religious pamphlets in front of the old City Hall on First Street, the proselytizing group has secured a free monthly permit to continue doing so on part of the wide concrete plaza of the new City Hall complex.

``We've been getting such a wonderful reception,'' said a woman manning the booth that flanks the main entrance to the new City Hall. She said until a disability curtailed her service hours below 50 hours a month, she'd been an ``auxiliary pioneer'' with the Jehovah's Witnesses. But she wouldn't give her name lest the publicity improperly ``reflect glory back on one person.''

Those who inhabit the interior of City Hall may prefer the new $382 million digs, but for this onetime auxiliary pioneer, the old City Hall was better. For one, the old building had ``so much greenery, flowers and trees.''

Also, at the old building she could park a stone's throw away -- making it easier to lug the folding table upon which the Watchtower pamphlets are arrayed. Now, she has to wheel the table on a metal cart. People have been saying, ``We're so glad you guys made it here,'' she added.

What would be really great is if someone from JWD got a free monthly permit to be in City Hall, except to pass out Silent Lambs brochures and sell the COC book.
