    G'day all,

On such a weekend with so much anguish, for those of us able to do so, perhaps the time is here to reminisce and look back on attending the District Conventions. Remember what it was like?

    Here's this week's question:

Was attending the DC a financial burden for you?

    1. No, I bought new clothes too!

    2. No, I didn't go.

    3. Not much.

    4. Yes, it was the parking 'donation' that killed it off for me.

    5. Yes, try taking time off work!

    6. Yes, so I only went on the weekends.

    7. Yes, so I only made it on Sundays.

    8. Yes, so I didn't go.

    9. Other? (please detail)

So there y'are people! What do you think? Let us know.

    Oh, and don't forget.....enjoy.

    Cheers, Ozzie

    1. No, I bought new clothes too!

I sometimes got new clothes, often ones my mother sewed for me and, when I was older, dresses I made for myself.

    2. No, I didn't go.

    We ALWAYS went. Sometimes twice.

    3. Not much.

Not for me, but my mother had to save and budget very carefully. My stepdad didn't go because he worked 14 hours/day 7days/week and hated crowds.

    4. Yes, it was the parking 'donation' that killed it off for me.

    Again, my mother's department.

    5. Yes, try taking time off work!

    NA

    6. Yes, so I only went on the weekends.

Sometimes we did this, if we were going a second time.

    7. Yes, so I only made it on Sundays.

    8. Yes, so I didn't go.

    9. Other? (please detail)

Cheers, Ozzie & Mrs. Have a good weekend.

I was raised treating the Conventions as vacations. It was the only time my Father took a bit of a break from work. Of coure growing up we had the money to go all out , new clothes for everyday, the works. We would go a couple of days early to visit the city we were in and went to the local malls and nice restaurants.

When I grew up and married , Denny and I did the same thing, but on a pioneer budget. We saved our money thru the year and made a great vacation out of it. I still have found memories of the excitement of it all, the traveling, the shopping, being in a new place, seeing old friends and of course that wonderful "spiritual food".....hehe.

I was a nerd, I truly loved the conventions.

Since I was the oldest of 4 sisters, once in a blue moon I'd get something new. Usually had to save my babysitting money. I sewed alot of things for me and my sisters. Money was always tight cause my stepdad would help out a single sister with a child and couldn't afford to go. Used to piss me off--no one else offered to help!

    1. No, I bought new clothes too!

New clothes only for school when I was a child. As an adult, I earned, I spent it the way I wanted to.

    2. No, I didn't go.

Really didn't attend much until I was a teenager.

    3. Not much.

I usually lived in the convention city so didn't need a hotel or had to spend much on gas.

    4. Yes, it was the parking 'donation' that killed it off for me.

I wouldn't buy a parking ticket. The attendants put slips on the cars without tickets reminding them to buy them. I just threw them away.

    5. Yes, try taking time off work!

Most were only 1 extra work day. I planned ahead asking off.

    6. Yes, so I only went on the weekends.

Friday was a borning day anyway. I never faulted people who missed Friday.

    7. Yes, so I only made it on Sundays.

Sundays are the second most boring day. Hey, you made it that far, why ruin the weekend.

    8. Yes, so I didn't go.

As a child, we had little money, we missed about 50% unless they were near or my non-JW, non-attending father was feeling flush with cash.

    9. Other? (please detail)

We attended when we could scrape together the money when I was young. After I turned 18, I paid my own way sharing a room with family or girlfriends. The worst part was not the money, it was the mind-numbing, boring talks.

    1. No, I bought new clothes too!

When I was young I usually got my mother's hand-me-downs or at least one new outfit. After I was married I usually made my clothes. There was a certain excitement about wearing something new.

    2. No, I didn't go.

    My motherand husband always went.

    4. Yes, it was the parking 'donation' that killed it off for me.

I was out before this came into effect

    6. Yes, so I only went on the weekends.

In my family not going was a sin

    9. Other? (please detail) I honestly don't know how my mother did it. She was a single parent had 4 kids at home at one point and was living on welfare and managed to save enough money to take us all to New York city one year and Toronto when the convention was there. I do recall all of us sleeping in the car one year.

My husband also managed to scrimp and save so we could go. One year we drove back and forth between Montreal and Ottawa (a two hour drive each way) with two little kids. And as good obedient JWs slaves we were early in the morning to find good seats and at the end of the day left late.

A part of me loved it but I also hated all the extra work it created

    1. No, I bought new clothes too!

    3. Not much. Sometimes it was a burden............but as years went by, we were more comfortable financially.

    8. Yes, so I didn't go. There was one year we didn't go. I was 7 months pregnant (1963), and the convention was in Pasadena (2000 miles away) that year. We had only been married a year, and had no money for that kind of travel.

    2. No. I didn't go because the JW's are taught to hate people like me who leave the cult Jerhover.
