That was an AWESOME op-ed piece, Shining One!! Thanks so much for sharing it with us!! HEY, here's something I got in an email today. How would you answer?

This test only has one question, but it's a very important one. By giving an honest answer, you will discover where you stand morally.
The test features an unlikely, fictional situation in which you will have to make a decision.

Remember that your answer needs to be honest, and spontaneous. Please scroll down slowly and give due consideration to each line.

    -------------------------
    THE SITUATION
You are in New Orleans, There is chaos all around you caused by a hurricane with severe flooding. You are a photo journalist working for a major newspaper, and you're caught in the middle of this epic disaster.

You're trying to shoot career-making photos. There are houses and people swirling around you and disappearing under the water.
    ===============================================
    THE TEST
Suddenly you see a man in the water. He is fighting for his life, trying not to be taken down with the debris. You move closer. Somehow the man looks familiar. You suddenly realize who it is. It's the President, George W. Bush.

At the same time you notice that the raging waters are about to take him under forever. You have two options- you can save the life of the President, or you can shoot a dramatic Pulitzer Prize winning photo, documenting the death of one of the world's most famous men.
    ===============================================
    THE QUESTION
Here's the question, and please give an honest answer.......

Would you select high contrast colour film, or would you go with the classic simplicity of black and white?

Bush is a Christian in a mostly Christian country, which is responsible for the freedom of millions while socialism and communism has killed hundreds of millions in the 20th century alone.

Ridiculous! Yes, socialism and communism has been perverted and used against people ... are you saying that capitalism has been good for the common people? HAHAHAHAHAHA!!!! That is ludicrous!

Hemp - that was really funny! (Not perhaps the best timing considering people died though...but it made me laugh :P)

Disasters always claim lives, I think that a brilliant effort was made all round by everyone its just that the US has never had to face this scale of disaster before. I can't think of anywhere that would have coped better. I could slap the faces of some of the reporters who keep tagging there news reports with such comments as '..people are asking how this could happen in the worlds richest economy' - being rich doesn't mean you are able to handle any problem with perfect ease.

This is the massive plus points:
1/ There was a plan - most of the areas were evacuated undoubtadly saving tens of thousands of lives - if not hundreds of thousands.
2/ As the scale became apparent massive relief operations swung into action - contrary to popular belief (hope) there aren't fully loaded available planes just sitting on the tarmac waiting to fly at a moments notice - the logistics involved beggars belief.
3/ America as a whole has coped immensely well, you've just absorbed 1 million displaced people without mass starvation or panic - no where else could have done that as smoothly IMO.
4/ You have the resources to cope despite policing the world, running several major relief operations in other countries etc.. You're the neighbour who looks after the sick, the hungry and oppressed while all the other neighbours are gossiping because your house is better than theirs.

    Makes be spit:
1/ Sensationalistic reporting focusing on the unfortunate thousands left (out of million saved) who for various reasons (not all simply poverty / inability) didn't go and got caught in a natural disaster.
2/ Pictures of dead bodies - what happened to respect and decency.
3/ Criticism of the leaders while the disaster is still underway. The time for recrimination / replanning / summing up is well after the event not during it. Division is sown by such idiocy just at the critical moment when everyone needs to be united and pull together.

Support your president if only for the time it takes to help the stricken.

Give me a break!!!! The reporting is probably the best it's been in some time. Journalists are actually doing their jobs for once. How can pictures of the dead be avoided when they're laying and rotting in the streets? It's also a right of the public to see what's actually happened down there...if you want a rosey outlook on it watch Bill O'Reilly on Fox...he's a clueless blind assh**e and he won't let you see any bad pictures. It's not idiotic to ask why people are still dying or even why so many had to die in the first place. Waiting for a Bush elected task force will only do what all his task forces do--FIND NO ONE BUT MAYBE SOME LITTLE GUYS TO TAKE ALL THE BLAME.

    Heathen- I'm with you.

If a dummy like Clinton (Gore or Kerry as well) had been in charge, who knows what would have happened!

Well I am sure that Clinton would have stood over the Levee like king Canute and held back the waters until the storm had subsided.

Did not really want to get dragged into another post attempting to educate some of our less free thinking American cousins over the pond, however this one takes the biscuit for uninformed comment.

Bush has the backbone to take the war on terror to the enemy in Afghanistan

Are these the same Afghan's that in the 80's were trained, funded and armed by the US government?

and right to the doorstep(s) of the murderous brute in Iraq,

Is this the same murderous brute that was trained, funded and armed by the US government in the 80's?

Bush has backbone, democracy is starting to free people in the middle east

Democratic in the American sense as in the case of the election rigging by Bush in Florida or Democratic in the Ukranian sense in that they protested against their rigged election and got the elction declared void.

Free as in the sort of freedom enjoyed in America whereby you cannot go outside for fear of getting shot, or free as in the European sense where in most places you can safely let your kids play outside unattended.

Bush is a Christian in a mostly Christian country, which is responsible for the freedom of millions while socialism and communism has killed hundreds of millions in the 20th century alone.

Christian as in the case of Mussolini, Adolf Hitler, General Franco and all the South American military dictators that were trained, funded and armed by the US government in the 60-70's.

Capitalism (as opposed to Socialism and Communism) has found a nifty way of getting around those inconvenient anti slavery laws dating back from the civil war. Why not export the slavery.
1/ Lend a third world country money for development in exchange for lowering of trade barriers
2/ Export cheap rice to the third world country
3/ The bottom falls out of the subsistance rice gowing economy
4/ Hike up the rice prices just a little
5/ Wait till the country is on the verge of starvation
6/ Farmers mass migrate to the towns in search of food
7/ Open up a Nike Factory to take advantage of cheap labour
8/ Provide housing for the grateful employees, who under the banner of freedom, democracy and capitalism have the luxury of a small room to house their entire family, a toilet for every 20 families, their own light bulb and an 18 hour working day in conditions that would be illegal back home.

How I look forward to the day when we here in Europe can enjoy the sweet joy of freedom and Democracy American Style.

Alan - disagree with just some ideas you put forward. You've made it sound as though there was a plan to open that NIKE factory:) I'm sure that wasn't what you meant 'cos that would be bonkers.

Europe are doing the same thing with sugar and the caribbean unfortunately. We are dumping sugar on them produced under a protectionist system that stops them exporting. Not pleasant.

U74 - would you be so 'balanced' if it was your family member floating by as the cameras rolled? I was really hoping to see America pull together like it has before but for a few people out their its as if someone picked a scab and there a lot of nastiness oozing.

I got quite proud of the humanity and true love shown by the majority of people across the US in volunteering, reaching out, rehousing and wanting to give. That rocks. Sniping doesn't cut it with me I'm afraid.

To those that think the pressure being put on the government is the work of the liberal media, the New York Times, the Internet, etc....erm, Shut Up! You're not fooling me on this one, this was the fault of state and federal government at the very highest levels and somebody has to pay for it, it's called "The Tough Shit Rule" and its one of the primary obligations of our govenment: if they fuck up, they have to investigate it. The same administration that was ultimately hesitant to meet with a 9-11 commission better accept a full fledged investigation on this one. If we had the time and resources to find out if Country Bill Clinton got a blow job or not, then I think we should do the honorable thing and give an answer to all the people who have lost their families. The issue isn't republicans and democrats...it's authority...or in this case, the lack thereof. And say what you will about John Kerry....the guy wouldn't of overstayed any vacation (by three days) in reacting this badly to a hurricane.

"If a dummy like Clinton (Gore or Kerry as well) had been in charge, who knows what would have happened!" -- Shining One

Let's see now, Clinton was a Rhodes Scholar, Bush is a person whose money and political influence were only good enough to raise his gpa at Yale to a C average. Rex, since you deem Clinton to be a "dummy," notwithstanding his incredible academic and professional achievements, perhaps you could give us some background on yourself, including your education as well as your professional achievements. Then we can assess your comments with the appropriate level of scrutiny.

Clinton's been gone for years; idiot so-called "conservatives" need to come up with a new Great Satan.

Preston - I agree heads must roll, lessons will hopefully be learnt and new procedures will be put in place but blaming one man right now is just uncpmfortable to me - do that in a few weeks / months etc.. I think laying blame now only ends up reducing collective effort rather than unifying.

Seeing the response of most has made me think seriously about looking at moving to the US at some point (assuming I can get a card) - I want to be amongst people like that.
