A recent thread where people were recommending music for someone going through a breakup, reminded me of the movie High Fidelity.

The main charatcer, Rob lists his top 5 breakup albums (and songs too I think, does anyone know what they were?)

What are the albums/songs that make you feel better, by making you feel worse? --->

    Here's a few of mine:

Blood on the Tracks - Bob Dylan

Definitely IMO the best of all time. You can listen to it over and over, it never gets old.

    Forever Blue - Chris Isaak

Every song was written about the same girl. Baby did a bad, bad thing indeed.

Sings Only For the Lonely - Frank Sinatra

Although In the Wee Small Hours was made after his breakup with Ava Gardner, this is a much better (and much darker) album. The definitive version of One For My Baby.

    Sea Change - Beck

This is the one you play while lying in bed, staring at the ceiling.

The Chain by Fleetwood Mac was always a good break up song and get over him/her. If you can get mad instead of hearbroken it sometimes made you feel better.

Boys II Men / Doin Just Fine

There was a time when I thought life was over and out
When you went away from me
My dying heart made it hard to breathe

    Would sit in my room
Because I didn’t want to have to go out
    And see you walking by
One look and I’d break right down and cry

Now you say that you’ve made a big mistake
Never meant to take your love away
But you can save your tired apologies
’cause it may seem hard to believe
    But

    I’m doin’ just fine
    Getting along very well
    Without you in my life
I don’t need you in my life

    I’m doin’ just fine
    Time made me stronger
You’re no longer on my mind

    You were my earth
    My number one priority
I gave me love to only you
    Anything you’d ask of me
    I would do

    But somewhere down the road
You felt a change in the weather
And told me that you had to journey on
A kiss in the wind and your love was gone

Now you say you never meant to play your games
Girl, don’t you know it’s far too late
Because you let our love just fall apart
You no longer have a heart

    When you said goodbye
    I felt so all alone
There were times at night I couldn’t sleep
My heart was much to weak to make it on my own
    Baby after all the misery
And pain you put me through
    So unfair to me girl
    You’re no longer my world
And I ain’t missin’ you at all

Heard it on the radio this week for the first time in about 3 years. It still is fresh in the energy that that was related in song. Made me remember too weel, the difficult days, behind, and ahead.

I agree, and actually the whole Rumours album is good breakup material.

Good point, skip over that track and replay "Never Going Back Again".

For me, it was Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness by Smashing Pumpkins.

I listened to that while enduring the heartbreak of the end of a 9-year relationship. It was perfect because it had everything -- all the mood swings including sappy romantic (e.g. "Love," "Cupid de Locke"), depressed heartbreak (i.e. "Bodies", "Thirty-Three"), and pure anger (i.e. "X.Y.U."), and to hear such change in moods was perfect because that is how my own emotions were -- chaotic and unfiltered. I credit that eclectic album for helping me through that difficult time....

Six, I agree with the Chris Isaak pick but I'd have to go with Wicked Game

I don't know the name or who sings it. About 1977, it says

    I'm not in love

    So don't forget it.

It's just a silly phase I'm going through. HL
