and have been walking for 2 hours looking for a chippy

or maybe you were looking for a carpenter, Katie? Perhaps you needed a nail banging in, or a bit of whittling doing, or something requiring a handyman skilled in the use of his tools.

    ig.

DUH !!! where were you people edumacated??

In the USA where, in some regions, a "chippy" can mean a woman (sometimes a man) of loose morals. Which is why I asked.

Fish and chips place does make sense, however. Thanks for the translation.

In Northern Ontario, a chippy is usually a chipmunk....

Delilah....but I knew she meant chips, or french fried potatoes.
