Whoever will give careful attention to this matter will notice that each succeeding child born in that foreign country will have increasingly resemblance to the Chinese — the hair, the skin, the shape of the eyes, and in general all features will bear closer resemblance with each succeeding child. We can readily suppose that if so much change occurs in a few years, ten or twenty centuries under similar conditions would turn any white people into regular Chinese, even supposing there were no intermarrying.

I can't believe the WT actually wrote this tripe. My question is how do they think that kids born to a white couple will eventually become asian looking just beacuse they live in China?

Not to make excuses for the Watchtower Society, but unfortunately alot of poeple were, and still are ignorant. Altough, Id like to see the expressions on some of the African American Jehovahs Witness faces when they saw this. Im sure they wouldnt be so willing to put in there 10 hours of feild service.

When confronted with this racist past, JWs (i.e. my parents) dismiss it by saying "well, remember the context of when this was said; many people believed in the superiority of the white race back then.
The problem is when Awake! 1982 February 8 throws mud at the catholics: "And for centuries the Catholic Church taught that Negroes were a cursed race. John F. Maxwell states in his book Slavery and the Catholic Church that this view "apparently survived until 1873 when Pope Pius IX attached an indulgence to a prayer for the 'wretched Ethiopians in Central Africa that almighty God may at length remove the curse of Cham [Ham] from their hearts.'""
So, it 1982, Awake! is slamming Catholics for being racist in 1873, and yet WTS themselves -- God's channel of communication, delivering delighful, correct words of truth -- held the same racist views up to 1929, and even suggest as recently as 1952 to *NOT* get involved with the Equal Rights movement: "So if the Bible does not instruct Christians to fight slavery it would not sanction them to battle the lesser evil of segregation, at the expense of gospel-preaching."
Even if -- *IF* -- you could dismiss their racism (personally, I cannot, but for the sake of argument...) as an "honest mistake", there is only one way you can look at them throwing "racist" mud at the catholics but ignoring their own racist record: a lie. And there's no such thing as an honest lie.
