Just saw a documentary on Metallica, seems James Hetfield, lead singer, had a rough childhood growing up in a cult-like home. His parents were strict Christian Science followers even to the point of watching his mother die of a very treatable cancer. I was amazed at how his experience mirrors the JW while growing up. After he learned it was a sham he grew angry and very bitter, much like how I feel. He even wrote a couple songs about it, here are the lyrics to one. Tell me who all can relate:

    Dyers Eve

    Dear mother
    Dear father
What is this hell you have put me through
    Believer
    Deceiver
Day in day out live my life through you
Pushed onto me what’s wrong or right
Hidden from this thing that they call life

    Dear mother
    Dear father
Every thought I’d think you’d disapprove
    Curator
    Dictator
    Always cencoring my every move
Children are seen bur are not heard
    Tear out everything inspired

    Innocence
Torn from me without your shelter
    Barred reality
    I’m living blindly

    Dear mother
    Dear father
Time has frozen still what’s left to be
    Hear nothing
    Say nothing
Cannot face the fact I think for me
    No guarantee,it’s life as is
But damn you for not giving me my chance

    Dear mother
    Dear father
You’ve clipped my wings before I learnt to fly
    Unspoiled
    Unspoken
    I’ve outgrown that fucking lullaby
Same thing I’ve always heard from you
Do as I say not as I do

    Innocence
Torn from me without your shelter
    Barred reality
    I’m living blindly
    I’m in hell without you
    Cannot cope without you two
Shocked at the world that I see
    Innocent victim please rescue me

    Dear mother
    Dear father
Hidden in your world you’ve made for me
    I’m seething
    I’m bleeding
Ripping wounds in me that never heal
Undying spite I feel for you
Living out this hell you always knew

I was aware that James grew up in a culty family. If you go back to their older material, his singing and guitar playing was so full of raw emotion, man I used to listen to the Kill 'Em All, Ride the Lightning and Master of Puppets albums all the f'n time, I loved the rage and aggression that he was able to channel into the music. I didn't grow up JW, but I did grow up in a pretty weird Catholic family, so I guess the music struck a chord with my subconscious.

I was always a fan of theirs, but I didn't know about the cult connection. That one song, really hit home with me.

Fleaman, Dave Mustaine was raised a Dub but I don't think think it really affected him to much....although some of his lyrics dabble with the "occult"

Here's a link to a interview where he talks about it: http://megadeth.rockmetal.art.pl/interviews_hitparader1987.html

On the black album he wrote 'the god that failed' which was about his experiences surrounding his mothers death and his anger towards god.

    Cool track;

Just showed my 15 year old son this post. He loves metallica. He asked me to copy the song and give it to his 16 year old JW cousin (not real cousin) who is showing first signs of rebellion against JW parenting. My son wants to tell her its the effect JW type religions have on people. I have said no, but I might give it to her older brother. He wont have anything to do with the religion, and actually phoned me for help recently. Then its up to him whether he shows it to the sister he so loves.

    Here's that one.

    Pride you took

    Pride you feel

Pride that you felt when you’d kneel

    Not the word

    Not the love

Not what you thought from above

    It feeds

    It grows

It clouds all that you will know

    Deceit

    Deceive

    Decide just what you believe

I see faith in your eyes

Never your hear the discouraging lies

I hear faith in your cries

    Broken is the promise, betrayal

The healing hand held back by the deepened nail

    Follow the God that failed

    Find your peace

    Find your say

Find the smooth road in your way

    Trust you gave

    A child to save

Left you cold and him in grave

    It feeds

    It grows

It clouds all that you will know

    Deceit

    Deceive

    Decide just what you believe

I see faith in your eyes

Never you hear the discouraging lies

I hear faith in your cries

    Broken is the promise, betrayal

The healing hand held back by the deepened nail

One of my favorites by Metallica is "The Cure."
