English is a funny language. No wonder it is so difficult and tricky to learn. Take, for example, the following, which come from: http://www.geocities.com

There is no "ham" in a hamburger

There is no "egg" in an eggplant

There is no "sand" in a sandwich

There is no "pine" or "pine" in a pineapple

    Why are boxing rings "square"?

Why do writers write, but fingers don't fing, and hammers don't ham?

If the plural of tooth is "teeth", why isn't the plural of booth "beeth"?

One mouse; two mice. One house; two houses One moose; two moose One fox; two foxes

How can a "slim chance" and a "fat chance" be the same? while a "wise man" and a "wise guy" are just the opposite?

When the stars are out, they are "visible". But when the lights are out, they are "invisible".

How can the weather be "hot as hell" one day, and "cold as hell" the next?

Why is "overlook" the opposite of "oversee"?

Why do we have noses that "run" and feet that "smell"?

Why do we park on driveways, but drive on parkways?

If you "wrote a letter" then why didn't you "bote your tongue"?

Where are all the people who ARE "spring chickens"?

Who WOULD actually "hurt a fly"?

    xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

You get the picture. So how many of these things can you come up with?

Time flies like an arrow, but fruit flies like an apple.

You can buckle (hold together) your belt or you can buckle (fall apart) under pressure.

One can cut (get in) in line or cut (get out) class.

If I fix my computer it works, but if I fix my dog he does not.

To screw (good sense) or Got screwed (bad sense)

raise/raze - a homophone pair that are each other's antonym

quite - can both mean totally, or anything other than totally.

Here's a whole page http://rinkworks.com/words/contronyms.shtml. How does anyone learn english without going mad?

I suppose that is what happens when you take an early Germanic dialect, mix it up with Latin and Norman French, then take it all over the world picking up more vocabulary.
