This song still brings tears to my eyes a song an old boy friend dedicated to me as our song. A lost love, but never forgotten. You never do forget your first love.

    Hey There Lonely Girl
    Eddie Holman

(Words and Music by Earl Shuman and Leon Carr)

Hey there lonely girl, lonely girl
Let me make your broken heart like new
Oh, my lonely girl, lonely girl
Don't you know this lonely boy loves you

Ever since he broke your heart you seem so lost
Each time you pass my way
How I long to take your hand
And say don't cry, I'll kiss your tears away
Hey there lonely girl, lonely girl
Let me make your broken heart like new
Oh my lonely girl, lonely girl
don't you know this lonely boy loves you

You think that only his two lips can kiss your lips
And make your heart stand still
But once you're in my arms you'll see
No one can kiss your lips the way I will
Hey there lonely girl, lonely girl
Let me make your broken heart like new

Oh, my lonely girl, lonely girl
Don't you know this lonely girl loves you
Oh my lonely girl, lonely girl
Don't you know this lonely boy loves you

See You On The Other Side ~ Ozzy

    Voices, a thousand, thousand voices
Whispering, the time has passed for choices
Golden days are passing over, yeah

I can’t seem to see you baby
Although my eyes are open wide
But I know I’ll see you once more
When I see you, I’ll see you on the other side
Yes, I’ll see you, I’ll see you on the other side

Leaving, I hate to see you cry
Grieving, I hate to say goodbye
    Dust and ash forever, yeah

Though I know we mus be parted
As sure as stars are in the sky
I’m gonna see when it comes to glory
And I’ll see you, I’ll see you on the other side
Yes I’ll see you, I’ll see you on the other side

Never thought I’d feel like this
    Strange to be alone, yeah
    But we’ll be together
Carved in stone, carved in stone, carved in stone

Hold me, hold me thight, I’m falling
    Far away. distant voices calling
I’m so cold. I need you darling, yeah

I was down, but now I’m flying
    Straight across the great divide
I know you’re crying, but I’ll stop you crying
When I see you, I see you on the other side
Yes. I’ll see you. see you on the othe side
I’m gonna see you. see you on the other side
God knows I’ll see you, see you on the other side, yeah

I’ll see you. see you on the othe side
I’m gonna see you. see you on the other side
God knows I’ll see you, see you on the other side, yeah
I wanna see you, yeah, yeah, yeah, see you on the other side
God knows I’ll see you, see you on the other side, yeah
I’m gonna see you. see you on the other side

Billy Bragg -- St. Swithin's Day (as performed by Dubstar)

    Thinking back now,
I suppose you were just stating your views
    What was it all for
For the weather or the Battle of Agincourt
And the times that we all hoped would last
Like a train they have gone by so fast
    And though we stood together
At the edge of the platform
We were not moved by them

    With my own hands
When I make love to your memory
    It's not the same
    I miss the thunder
    I miss the rain
And the fact that you don't understand
Casts a shadow over this land
But the sun still shines from behind it.

    Thanks all the same
But I just can't bring myself to answer your letters
    It's not your fault
But your honesty touches me like a fire
The Polaroids that hold us together
    Will surely fade away
Like the love that we spoke of forever
    On St Swithin's Day

Just found this thread, but no way could I read through all seven pages...so I hope this isn't a duplication. I debated over two songs, but voted against "Seasons in the Sun" by Terry Jacks--and in favor of "Seventeen" by Janis Ian. This song is just so sad and pathetic to me, and I was never even a teenage girl!

I LEARNED THE TRUTH AT SEVENTEEN
THAT LOVE WAS MEANT FOR BEAUTY QUEENS
AND HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS WITH CLEAR SKINNED SMILES
WHO MARRIED YOUNG AND THEN RETIRED
    THE VALENTINES I NEVER KNEW
THE FRIDAY NIGHT CHARADES OF YOUTH
WERE SPENT ON ONE MORE BEAUTIFUL
AT SEVENTEEN I LEARNED THE TRUTH

AND THOSE OF US WITH RAVAGED FACES
    LACKING IN THE SOCIAL GRACES
    DESPERATELY REMAINED AT HOME
    INVENTING LOVERS ON THE PHONE
WHO CALLED TO SAY - COME DANCE WITH ME
    AND MURMURED VAGUE OBSCENITIES
IT ISN'T ALL IT SEEMS AT SEVENTEEN

A BROWN EYED GIRL IN HAND ME DOWNS
WHOSE NAME I NEVER COULD PRONOUNCE
SAID - PITY PLEASE THE ONES WHO SERVE
THEY ONLY GET WHAT THEY DESERVE
    THE RICH RELATIONED HOMETOWN QUEEN
    MARRIES INTO WHAT SHE NEEDS
    WITH A GUARANTEE OF COMPANY
    AND HAVEN FOR THE ELDERLY

SO REMEMBER THOSE WHO WIN THE GAME
LOSE THE LOVE THEY SOUGHT TO GAIN
IN DEBENTURES OF QUALITY AND DUBIOUS INTEGRITY
THEIR SMALL-TOWN EYES WILL GAPE AT YOU
IN DULL SURPRISE WHEN PAYMENT DUE
    EXCEEDS ACCOUNTS RECEIVED AT SEVENTEEN

    (INSTRUMENTAL)

TO THOSE OF US WHO KNEW THE PAIN
    OF VALENTINES THAT NEVER CAME
AND THOSE WHOSE NAMES WERE NEVER CALLED
    WHEN CHOOSING SIDES FOR BASKETBALL
IT WAS LONG AGO AND FAR AWAY
THE WORLD WAS YOUNGER THAN TODAY
WHEN DREAMS WERE ALL THEY GAVE FOR FREE
TO UGLY DUCKLING GIRLS LIKE ME

WE ALL PLAY THE GAME, AND WHEN WE DARE
    WE CHEAT OURSELVES AT SOLITAIRE
    INVENTING LOVERS ON THE PHONE
    REPENTING OTHER LIVES UNKNOWN
THAT CALL AND SAY - COME DANCE WITH ME
    AND MURMUR VAGUE OBSCENITIES
AT UGLY GIRLS LIKE ME, AT SEVENTEEN

Annie Lennox - The Diva The Gift Darling don't you understand I feel so ill at ease
The room is full of silence and it's getting hard to breathe
Take this guilded cage of pain and set me free
    Take this overcoat of shame
It never did belong to me
It never did belong to me
    I need to go outside
I need to leave the smoke
'Cause I can't go on living in this same sick joke
It seems our lives have taken on a different kind of twist
Now that you have given me the perfect gift
You have given me the gift
For we have fallen from our shelves
To face the truth about ourselves
And we have tumbled from our trees
    Tumbled from our trees
And I can almost... I can almost feel the rain falling
Don't you know it feels so good
So let's go out into the rain again
Just like we said we always would................................

''HOME THOUGHTS FROM ABROAD'' - Clifford T. Ward (1973)

I could be a millionaire if I had the money
    I could own a mansion, no I don't think I'd like that
But I might write a song that makes you laugh, now that would be funny
And you could tell your friends in England you'd like that
But now I've chosen aeroplanes and boats to come between us
And a line or two on paper wouldn't go amiss
How is Worcestershire? Is it still the same between us?
Do you still use television to send you fast asleep?
Can you last another week? Does the cistern still leak?
Or have you found a man to mend it?
Oh, and by the way, how's your broken heart?
Is that mended too? I miss you
I miss you, I really do.

I've been reading Browning, Keats and William Wordsworth
And they all seem to be saying the same thing for me
Well I like the words they use, and I like the way they use them
You know, Home Thoughts From Abroad is such a beautiful poem
And I know how Robert Browning must have felt
'Cause I'm feeling the same way about you
Wondering what you're doing and if you need some help
Do I still occupy your mind? Am I being so unkind?
Do you find it very lonely, or have you found someone to laugh with?
Oh, and by the way, are you laughing now?
'Cause I'm not, I miss you
I miss you, I really do.

    I really do.

    Freelove Freeway by David Brent

long time later I see a cowboy crying

"Hey buddy, what can I do?"

He says, "I lived a good life, had about a thousand women,"

I said, "Why the tears?", he says, " 'Cause none of them was you."

At Seventeen is a great song. Have you ever seen Janis Ian in concert? Great concert. She is an amazing singer...call me dumb; but I didn't know she was gay...
