Makes me incredibly mad, too. Words (including all the best swear ones in abundance) do not suffice.
It was the strangest feeling, having my mother present at the birth of my daughter and knowing she would let me and/or my baby die rather than give the authorization to use blood if there was an emergency and it was necessary.
The doctor asked, she shook her head and said "not me," my baby's father looked uncomfortable and unsure, and I said that, if it were necessary, then he had my authorization for both of us and I signed a paper right there in front of my God/GoverningBody-fearing mother (whom I love dearly, but Jeezus!!!).
