Is country music more approved than any other for a witness?

I remember an elder telling me that listening to Elton John may not be appropriate, being that Elton is gay.

I had another elder go through my record collection, and recommend to my parents which albums to destroy.

My mom went as far as scratching the songs on the album, of those that were not appropriate. One album, really not that bad at all, got 9 songs destroyed out of 10. What sucked though, was that it was tough to only scratch that one song. Usually she would miss a little bit and screw up a perfectly good song next to it.

look out if he is listening to country music, or so The Judds tell us

    HAVE MERCY

I was standing in line at the city bus stop
Soaked to the skin from ev'ry rain drop
I see you driving by just like a phantom jet
With your arm around some little brunette
You say you won't be home because you're working late
Honey, I'm no fool, you've been out on a date
The lipstick on your collar gives the game away
It's strawberry red and mine's pink rose
    (Chorus)
    Have mercy on me
You treat me so bad I'm in misery
It's breaking my heart, can't you see
Baby, baby have mercy on me
Well I called you up on the telephone
I could hear you was playin' Haggard and Jones
I knew right then that there was something wrong
There's only one reason you play cheatin' songs
    (Repeat Chorus)
Went to the bank with my little check book
The cashier he gave me the strangest look
He said you ain't got no money 'cause you're over drawn
Your man took it all and he's done gone
    (Repeat Chorus)

Hi worldly wife---- I sang with a Jw for 5 years in a local country band. The elders told him to stop singing with me-- too much association with a non -witness you know. But they never said a word about the songs that we sang- and my partner sang a lot of conway twitty songs such as i've already loved you in my mind and tight fittin jeans. Hard to understand isn't it.... Sugarbritches

The only music that is not frowned upon is the Kingdom Melodies. Any other music is considered worldly.

I've actually been to JW parties as a teen where nothing but the Kingdom Melodies were played.

Holy Crap, and I thought my congregation was bad for stuff like that. I'll never complain about another JW party ever again.

If elders from 1975 went through a time portal and came out at a 2005 JW wedding party, they would be shocked. The WTS can talk a good story of how JWs remain seperate from the world but in my life history has shown that JWs are part of the world, just 20 to 30 years behind everybody else.

Funny you should mention time portals. I've always looked at country western stars and it looks like they just came out of a time portal from 10 or 20 years ago. If country-western stars are 20-30 years behind the rest of the world and so are JWs, they should make a perfect match.

I dunno.. but when I paid for tickets to see Alan Jackson for my JW mother and brother, SHE was in a quandary as to come to it. We met for dinner beforehand, my Mom still had reservations about going until she saw another lady from her congregation who had dressed up in her full Western regalia and was going to the concert.. then it was okay.

I was MORTIFIED when Alan Jackson played that song about 9-11, and the whole audience stood up to show their respects to the victims of 9-11, and my JW mother and brother just sat in their seats, and my Mother made a "pshaw" motion with her hand. Luckily, the rest of the family down the row stood up and paid their respects. It wasn't a religious song, per se, but he did say he believed in Jesus, and he believed in God, in the song, and I guess that was what ticked her off. Here are the lyrics:

Where Were You (When The World Stopped Turning)
Where were you when the world stopped turning on that September day?
Were you in the yard with your wife and children
Or working on some stage in L.A.?
Did you stand there in shock at the sight of that black smoke
    Rising against that blue sky?
Did you shout out in anger, in fear for your neighbor
Or did you just sit down and cry?

Did you weep for the children who lost their dear loved ones
And pray for the ones who don't know?
Did you rejoice for the people who walked from the rubble
And sob for the ones left below?
Did you burst out with pride for the red, white and blue
And the heroes who died just doin' what they do?
Did you look up to heaven for some kind of answer
And look at yourself and what really matters?
    CHORUS (1x)
Where were you when the world stopped turning on that September day?
Teaching a class full of innocent children
Or driving down some cold interstate?
Did you feel guilty cause you?re a survivor
In a crowded room did you feel alone?
    Did you call up your mother to tell her you loved her;
Did you dust off that Bible at home?

Did you open your eyes and hope it never happened,
Close your eyes and not go to sleep?
Did you notice the sunset for the first time in ages,
Speak to some stranger on the street?
Did you lay down at night and think of tomorrow,
And go out and buy you a gun?
Did you turn off that violent ol movie you?re watchin And turn on I Love Lucy
    reruns?

Did you go to a church and hold hands with some strangers
or stand in line and give your own blood?
Did you just stay home and cling tight to your family,
Thank God you had somebody to love?
    CHORUS 2x

    CHORUS
I'm just a singer of simple songs
    I'm not a real political man;
I watch CNN but I'm not sure I can tell you
The difference in Iraq and Iran.
But I know Jesus, and I talk to God,
And I remember this from when I was young:
Faith, hope, and love are some good things He gave us,
    And the greatest is love.

    And the greatest is love.
    And the greatest is love.

Where were you when the world stopped turning on that September day?

I was so embarassed when people around us at the concert were looking at them and whispering in each other's ears.

So I can't say that country is more approved by the JWs, but I do know for sure that country is approved by me.

If my JW honey is any indication, current music is hopelessly decadent, oldies are OK, Kingdom Melodies are fine when he is feeling "extra spiritual", and Christian Gospel music is demonized.

    CG,

she's lucky somone did not escort her out of there. JWS frequently do things like this and wonder why people think they are deranged.

    Wednesday:

I was MORTIFIED. I'm not sure what even triggered it, but they just sat there and laughed through that whole song, made passing motions with their hands, and at one point my MS brother had to leave. It was *not* a good point in my life. The rest of my family stood up, held their hands over their hearts, and listened while he sang the song. They sat down in the first two seats in teh row and made a mockery of him, his music, and his art, which made me really insane. I will NEVER take them to a concert again. It was *so* embarassing! It wasn't EVEN a political song, as you can see by the lyrics, but just the fact that they DIDN'T stand up out of respect for the victims made me cray.

    Oh well, I am learning...
