Kentucky presiding overseers obfuscate facts in print

Here's a puff-piece in the Danville, Kentucky, USA newspaper. It looks like it was written by a public relations representative of the WTS and published word-for-word. The news was that a Spanish congregation has been added. They use words like "church" and "parishioner" to try to sound mainstream.

Here's the link (you may have to copy and paste this address into your browser) http://www.amnews.com/public_html/?module=displaystory&story_id=9272&format=html

Here's the part where the presiding overseers, um, stretched the truth a little. But you know, they have to APPEAR to be reasonable.

Concerning two other well-publicized but also, according to Mudge and Uhrig, misunderstood "myths" about the church, they said it is not true that Jehovah's Witnesses don't believe in Jesus Christ and it is also untrue that members are unpatriotic.

"Jehovah means God. Our name highlights and accentuates God but that does not mean we're at the same time devaluing Christ," Uhrig said.

Concerning the patriotism issue, Jehovah's Witnesses are taught that their only governmental allegiance is to "God's government" and that posture is supported in the Book of Romans.

"We are neutral when it comes to government and politics," said Uhrig. "We respect other governments, including the U.S. government, and their flags but our government is God's government."

Uhrig stressed that the church does not "force people not to vote or not to join the military."

"We are not some subversive organization," he said. "We have our beliefs, but it is up to each Witness how he or she will follow those beliefs."

And that includes those Witnesses who understand and express those beliefs in Spanish.

Did presiding overseer Uhrig really say that JW's can vote and join the military, and that it's up to them? Could this be...... theocratic warfare??

Don Mudge, owner of a local carpet-cleaning company, is the presiding overseer of the English-speaking congregation, which currently includes five elders and 53 active members. Jim Uhrig, owner of a local janitorial and cleaning services company, serves as presiding overseer of the Spanish-speaking congregation

    hehe check out their occupations.

More devious sayings from "brother carpet-cleaner" and "brother janitor":

they said it is also untrue that members are unpatriotic.

PATRIOTIC - adjective: Feeling, expressing or inspired by love for one's country. When are JW's ever inspired by love for their country as opposed to any other? Something as simple as standing for the national anthem is a no-no among them. When has an impartial observer ever called a JW patriotic?

    "our government is God's government."

This means theocracy, right? Whenever there's a conflict between man's laws and the laws of their religious organization, they obey their religious organization, which is seen as an extension of God's government. Any existing government of man is viewed as a necessary evil.

"We are not some subversive organization,"

SUBVERSIVE - adjective: Intended or serving to subvert, especially intended to overthrow or undermine an established government. When new possible converts advance beyond the part of their studies with all the beautiful pictures of the purported future new world, they are taught that all governments are tools of Satan and his demons meant to distract people from "God's Kingdom" as preached by JW's. The United Nations is the "image of the wild beast", and Great Britain and the USA form a combined "world power" that misleads the nations and tells them to worship the "image of the wild beast". All governments are purported to be part of a world system that will soon end, and only those who read the Watchtower magazine and support Watchtower leadership will survive after the end of this world's governments.

Viewed realistically, such teachings can only serve to "undermine" the governments in the minds of people who come to believe them.

Gopher (love your handle) I caught those three-plus contradictions, too. If JW's are not unpatriotic, but only support God's kingdom and government, then why are they allowed to vote and join the military? And voting and military service for which governments? Hmmm. I'm not even commenting on the subversive organization bit. False publicity from a false prophet? Or just a confused carpet cleaner and janitor sniffing too many chemicals?

    Hugs

Someone who lives in this area should send a letter to the editor about this one. I did this back in Omaha a few years ago when the local JW elder was lying about the blood issue.

Uhrig stressed that the church does not "force people not to vote or not to join the military."

The key phrase is "it is up to each Witness how he or she will follow those beliefs". What they mean by this is they don't force you not to vote, but by your voting you are disassociating yourself because of your actions. They say the same thing regarding blood transfusions or joining another church. This is how they can say that they don't force you by threat of disfellowshipping. It is by your actions that you disassociate yourself. That's all part of the legalistic word game they play.

When Don Mudge was in high school he took some classes in business law and math because he planned to own a corner grocery.

He runs what he describes as "the last of the mom and pop businesses," but it's not a grocery store.

Super Clean Carpets is a business that evolved from janitorial work and cleaning windows that Don started doing in 1965. That business grew until he was taking care of the Boyle County Library, where he spent 19 years, and Danville City Hall.

"I like being on my own," Don said.

Cleaning houses and businesses, however, meant long hours. Days were spent cleaning houses and evenings were spent in businesses.

"This is so much better," Don said about specializing in carpet and floors. "It's day work."

Daniel, 21, had no plans to join his father's business. He had taken computer-assisted design classes in high school, but he had reached the point where he didn't want to spend any more time in school. Joining his dad's business was a natural. He had been helping out since he was a youngster.

"He would dust the things down low -- the baseboards and chair rungs," his dad said. "I'm surprised he liked it."

Helping out continued as Daniel grew up. Every summer, he would work full time, earning money for such things as a car. Now he has other spending priorities; he and his wife, Lindsay, are expecting a son in March.

Super Clean Carpets is a true "mom and pop" operation. Don's wife, Barbara, handles all the scheduling and keeps the books.

She is largely the reason the Mudges are in central Kentucky and not upstate New York, where Don grew up. Her family had moved to Paris from New York state and on a visit back home to visit a girl friend, she met Don. It so happens, Don's twin brother is married to the friend Barbara was visiting.

    A trained master cleaner

The decision to specialize on floors and floor coverings was largely one of focusing energies, Don said. He has developed the business to the place he is able every three years to buy a new truck complete with cleaning equipment. Don is a trained master cleaner, one of only 10 in Kentucky. That means he is trained to clean just about any type of floor covering, re-dye carpets and clean upholstery.

The key to running your own business, Don said, is customer satisfaction. Most of his work comes from referrals. One of his favorite sayings is "you don't cut corners, you clean them."

Having Daniel in the business has made the work easier. It also has given Don the opportunity to take some time for church work. He plans to spend two days a week doing volunteer ministry with Jehovah's Witnesses.

The father and son have found it easy to work together.

"I ask his opinion," Don said. "I feel good about sending him out on a job alone and not having to worry."

And Daniel feels like he is an equal partner in the business.

Don sees the carpet cleaning business as a growth area.

"The carpet is the most neglected thing in the home," he said.

Carpets should be cleaned every year to a year and half.

"If everyone did that, there wouldn't be enough cleaners to go around."

As Don looks back on the past 37 years, he said he would never have imagined his business would have grown the way it has.

"It's like a dream come true."
