I used to be a huge 'Slayer' fan about, hmmm, 17-18 years ago and went to see them live, clambered on stage and threw myself into the audience - this at a time when stage diving was just kicking in big time. It was quite a violent gig and the 'mosh' pit at the front was intense.
I can't listen to them now at all without reaching for the off button on my player. The lyrics to Angel of Death used to really get to my parents, I wonder why?
Off your old-school hard rock list, I also saw Megadeth/Iron Maiden (twice)/Metallica (twice I think). All during the 80s. Metallica were probably the most impressive band live at that time (off the back of the Master of Puppets LP).
I went through a hard rock/thrash phase, as you can tell. This burnt out after hmmm.... 3-4 years as I got into Jazz (of all things!).

In a more traditional sense - Miles Davis. Just been listening to a few hours worth of late 60s sessions featuring Miles - superb stuff.

I'm reaching the same stage with my Metallica and Megadeth, I can only stomach a few songs, the others I've overplayed so much..
I'm slowly getting towards the end of my thrash phaze, I'm half way through the Slayer and Iron Maiden discographies. I'm trying to prolong it a bit by listening to a lot of stuff on the other end of the spectrum..
Cinematic Orchestra, Sixtoo, Roots Manuva, Aim, Air, Boards Of Canada, RJD2, Aphex Twin
then theres all the jungle, drum n base, punk, house, that I listen to regularly.
And I'm just getting into Beethoven and Mozart as well.
Overall nothing reaches the brilliance of good metal though (maybe I just haven't listened to all the other stuff for long enough) -
