... Four were born in the last 175 years: Bahá'í, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Jehovah's Witnesses and Seventh Day Adventists. ... [ Excerpt:Perhaps 5 million people follow these faiths in the United States, less than 2 percent of the population. But experts say they're more interesting and more important than their numbers suggest.

"They become important because they revivify the whole tradition," said Gordon Melton, an authority on new religious movements. So church renewal movements like Vineyard and Calvary Chapel put a charge into Christianity, he said.

They can affect international relations. The Falun Gong, for instance, make sure their claim of persecution at the hands of the Chinese government is heard in many other nations.

And new religious movements challenge the faithful in other traditions. "They make me consider questions I never would have asked," said the Rev. John Saliba, a Jesuit priest and professor at the University of Detroit Mercy. They're spiritual "experiments" that can be studied to figure out how religion works. Sociologists track these movements the way genetic biologists focus on fruit flies.

And once in a while, they make the big time. ....

BQE: Despite their testosterone, writers can be cattier than a den full of sorority girls. They're always slagging each other off as "toy." It doesn't matter if the graffiti is in a good spot. If a writer is a newcomer, an out-of-towner, a trustafarian who hangs out in fancy L.E.S. sneaker stores?his work is toy. But on the BQE, graff artist Si isn't toy. His huge straight-letter logo, floating way high up on Brooklyn's Watchtower, is a middle finger to that Jehovah's Witness head-quarters. Another remarkable piece is the tag DEK PHAME in eye-popping blue and orange, between the exits for 39th and the Prospect Expressway.

    Smuggler blames debt over drugs
    By Christine Caulfield
    October 9, 2004

A JOURNALIST with a heroin addiction said he smuggled 1.4kg of cocaine into Australia to settle a debt with his dealers.

Royal Turanga Eria Abbott, 51, a New Zealand citizen, had been abusing drugs for more than 30 years in a bid to rebel against his strict Jehovah's Witness upbringing, the County Court heard.

His addiction worsened in 1993 after a serious car crash killed a close friend, and spiralled out of control when an eight-year relationship ended last year.

The Australian Associated Press reporter pleaded guilty to importing cocaine with a street value of up to $800,000.

He has been behind bars on remand since April 19, when he arrived at Melbourne airport from South Africa and was nabbed by Customs.

JEHOVAH'S WITNESSES TO DELIVER U.S. MAIL!
The U.S. Postal System is conducting an experimental project to slash costs: They enlisted Jehovah's Witnesses to deliver the mail for free!

"Hey, they're walking from house to house anyway, they might as well stick the letters in the box, too," says a postal official in Polar Express, Alaska, where the unique plan is being scrutinized by every other city in the nation.

So far, the Witnesses have performed their duties diligently, and postal employees are happy to abandon their grueling treks for other, less demanding, jobs.

But homeowners say the service sucks.
"Those religious whack jobs won't ust leave my Social Security check and hit the road," says Heddy Quagmire. "They knock on the door and jabber about the path of righteousness and 'spreading the good news.' That bull@%#% annoys the hell out of me."

Jerry Goldmeyer agrees with his neighbor.

"They don't take no for an answer," he says. "I pushed one geek off my porch and even as he fell backwards into the mud he was still flapping his gums about some stupid place called Christ's Kingdom. And I don't get mail until midnight!"

A Postal System insider says they're still working out the details of the new arrangement.
