    I'll re-phrase what Kate said:

    Just do it!!!

I found that I was already using forms of meditation that were taught to me when learning TaiChi.
I use several forms, depending on what I'm trying to achieve, but none of them require external "tools". I used tools for a couple of forms, to begin with, but found they were unnecessary.

I see meditation as a method to access the part of your brain that doesn't talk. That inarticulate side is good at processing large amounts of data in to a cohesive form in a nonlinear way. (Language, or talking, is largely linear). From that part of our brain we get intuitive leaps and weird dreams.

Of interest is reading the accounts of brain-damaged people who are missing part of their brain functions. Sometimes we take for granted what we have until it is not there.

Gumby, I did the sound meditation last night. It was the first time in a couple of years. You cannot believe how relaxed and refreshed I am this morning. Thanks for reminding me of it.
