Family in Florida? Red Cross info

If you have family in Florida that was hit by the hurricane and you can't get in touch, contact the chapter of the Red Cross closest to your family's residence.

The Red Cross registers everyone that comes in for help, including food, shelter or medical assistance. They also are already beginning family re-unification programs putting family members in touch with each other.

The American Red Cross branches for the two major areas are:

Punta Gorda/Charlotte County Red Cross - (941) 629-4345

Orlando Red Cross - (407) 894-4141

You can imagine how busy the disaster services personnel are right now so the Red Cross asks that requests for family members only be done today. This is so families can be brought together first.

Friends in search of friends can call tomorrow onwards.

Hoping everyone is all right. Last I heard there were 3 confirmed deaths, which in view of the damage is incredibly low.

It's not looking good. The number has reached 15 dead and hundreds are reported missing. Thousands are homeless and even more are without power. Gov. Bush said that Punta Gorda appeared to be the hardest hit and there is extensive damage throughout the rest of the region of Florida that was in the path of Charley. The Tallahassee area was not effected by either Tropical Storm Bonnie or Hurricane Charley. We got off easy, this time.

My daughter and grandson are in Polk Cty and I was a complete wreck last night being so worried. I kept the TV pretty much on MSNBC and CNN to keep up with all that was going on.

My son came over for a while and we just sat here in silence. I barely slept and put the TV on before 7:00 AM to catch up---and it was worse than expected. I called my son and he said he tried to call down there after he left here but couldn't get through.

He came back this morning and we just didn't know WHAT to do! Just sitting here waiting was awful----and then the phone rang. MY DAUGHTER AND SHE AND LITTLE JASON WERE FINE!!!!

They had stayed the night with some other folks and had gone back this morning to her home. Just a fence blown down and a few trees looking pretty sad----but that was all!

She was on a borrowed cell phone and we didn't talk too long....but she DID say that the next street over from her was a disaster, but her area was spared any real damage!!!!

I asked her if she knew about this and that I had seen on TV and she was shocked! It occurred to me without power---they hadn't any idea of what had gone on during the night! It was like when we had that ice storm that knocked down almost every tree up here and kept our power off for a week....and WE didn't know how far reaching the storm was until we saw the TV and the papers!

She said she had just gotten a new refrigerator delivered the day before yesterday and had bought a lot of stuff for the bigger freezer......which went off last night about 8:00 PM! I told her to call the appliance store and tell'em it wasn't working, LOL! She said yeah, it's still under warranty! (grin)

I haven't heard from my super-fine reg-pioneer elder's-wife daughter (in FL too) but I hadn't really thought she'd call to let me know much of anything.

Ennyhoo......we had good news about my daughter and g'son.....and I was SO grateful!!!!!!

Now that Charley has calmed down a bit, he shouldn't be as devastating as he has been....my thoughts are with all in his path.
