If you are in the UK, check out http://www.multimap.com which has just been enhanced.
The Camera (Arial Map) button will display just that, an arial map of where you live plus as you move your mouse over the picture it overlays the streetname and street map. Very neat !

The photos dont seem to work in the US though (probably like you have noted, only in the UK) :(
If you are in the US just type in your address below and it shows your street and home. Some of the pics are a couple of years old, but it shows a viarity of different maps for each address.
