Do you think people are good?

The human race is a bit like nature. There is the herd of herbivors grazing peacefully at their jobs, obeying the rules, fighting the wars, paying their taxes, etc. Then, as in nature, there is a much smaller number that are predators/parasites. They can be controlers of huge corps/govt bodies, or scammers in the nieghborhood, always on the watch for an easy victim. These people stampede/manipulate the trusting/helpless/docile majority for their own gain.

Check out the lyrics to the pink floyd animals album. Similar to the album, possibly one day, thousands of yrs from now, the sheep will wake up/rise up and throw off the pig/dog/vampires.

    Pink Floyd : Animals

Pigs On The Wing. (Part One)

If you didn't care what happened to me,
And I didn't care for you,
We would zig zag our way through the boredom and pain,
Occasionally glancing up through the rain,
Wondering which of the buggers to blame
And watching for pigs on the wing.

    Dogs.

You gotta be crazy, you gotta have a real need.
You gotta sleep on your toes, and when you're on the street,
You gotta be able to pick out the easy meat with your eyes closed.
And then moving in silently, down wind and out of sight
You gotta strike when the moment is right without thinking.

And after a while, you can work on points for style
Like the club tie, and the firm handshake,
A certain look in the eye and an easy smile.
You have to be trusted by the people that you lie to,
So that when they turn their backs on you
You'll get the chance to put the knife in.
You gotta keep one eye looking over your shoulder.
You know it's going to get harder, and harder and harder as you get older.
And in the end you'll pack up and fly down south,
Hide your head in the sand,
    Just another sad old man,
All alone and dying of cancer.

And when you loose control, you'll reap the harvest you have sown.
And as the fear grows, the bad blood slows and turns to stone.
And it's too late to loose the weight you used to need to throw around.
So have a good drown, as you go down, alone,
    Dragged down by the Stone.

I gotta admit that I'm a little bit confused.
Sometimes it seems to me as if I'm just being used.
Gotta stay awake, gotta try and shake off this creeping malaise.
If I don't stand my own ground, how can I find my own way out of this maze ?

Deaf, dumb and blind, you just keep on pretending
That everyone's expendable and no one has a real friend.
And it seems to you the thing to do would be to isolate the winner.
And everything's done under the sun,
And you believe at heart, everyone's a killer.

Who was born in a house full of pain.
Who was trained not to spit in the fan.
Who was told what to do by the man.
Who was broken by trained personnel.
Who was fitted with collar and chain.
Who was given a pat on the back.
Who was breaking away from the pack.
Who was only a stranger at home.
Who was ground down in the end.
Who was found dead on the phone
Who was dragged down by the stone.

    Pigs (Three Different Ones).

Big man, pig man, ha ha charade you are.
You well heeled big wheel, ha ha charade you are.
And when your hand is on your heart,
    You're nearly a good laugh,
    Almost a joker,
With your head down in the pig bin
    Saying, "keep on digging."
Pig stain on your fat chin.
What do you hope to find?
When you're down in the pig mine
    You're nearly a laugh,
    You're nearly a laugh,
    But you're really a cry.
    -----------------
Bus stop rat bag, ha ha charade you are.
You f***ed up old hag, ha ha charade you are
You radiate cold shafts of broken glass.
    You're nearly a good laugh,
    Almost worth a quick grin
You like the feel of steel,
You're hot stuff with a hat pin,
And good fun with a hand gun.
    You're nearly a laugh,
    You're nearly a laugh,
    But you're really a cry.
    -----------------
    Hey you Whitehouse,
    Ha ha charade you are
    You house proud town mouse,
    Ha ha charade you are
You're trying to keep our feelings off the street
    You're nearly a real treat,
All tight lips and cold feet,
    And do you feel abused?
    .....! ......! ......! ......!
You gotta stem the evil tide,
And keep it all on the inside.
    Mary you're nearly a treat,
    Mary you're nearly a treat
    But you're really a cry.

    Sheep.

Harmlessly passing your time in the grassland away,
Only dimly aware of a certain unease in the air.
    You better watch out,
    There may be dogs about
I've looked over Jordan, and I have seen,
Things are not what they seem.

What do you get for pretending the danger's not real.
Meek and obedient you follow the leader
Down well trodden corridors, into the valley of steel.
    What a surprise!
A look of terminal shock in your eyes.
Now things are really what they seem,
No, this is not bad dream.

THE LORD IS MY SHEPHERD. I SHALL NOT WANT
HE MAKES ME DOWN TO LIE
THROUGH PASTURES GREEN HE LEADETH ME
    THE SILENT WATERS BY.
WITH BRIGHT KNIVES HE RELEASETH MY SOUL
HE MAKETH ME TO HANG ON HOOKS IN HIGH PLACES.
HE CONVERTETH ME TO LAMB CUTLETS.
FOR LO, HE HATH GREAT POWER, AND GREAT HUNGER.
WHEN COMETH THE DAY WE LOWLY ONES
THROUGH QUIET REFLECTION, AND GREAT DEDICATION,
    MASTER THE ART OF KARATE.
    LO, WE SHALL RISE UP,
AND THEN WE'LL MAKE THE BUGGERS' EYES WATER.

Bleating and babbling I fell on his neck with a scream.
Wave upon wave of demented avengers
March cheerfully out of obscurity into the dream.

    Have you heard the news?
    The dogs are dead!
    You better stay home
    And do as you're told.
Get out of the road if you want to grow old.

Pigs On The Wing. (Part Two)

You know that I care what happens to you,
And I know that you care for me,
    So I don't feel alone.
Or the weight of the stone,
Now that I've found somewhere safe
    To bury my bone.
And any fool knows a dog needs a home,
A shelter from pigs on the wing.

When I held my first daughter in my arms a few moments after her birth I found it impossible to believe that this wonderful miracle of life was somehow evil just because she drew breath.

I have been and have worked with people who have been through the most horrendous of experiences that one could imagine for a child. It affects the victims. And some come away scarred for life and then pass that on.

But by far I have seen the goodness inpeople. The will to be strong and lind and loving. I have seen them vow to never hurt another person intentionally. I have watched some give away their socks for someone else who had none. I have watched them extend a hand of kindness to others and even forgive the very people who hurt them. I have also watched them trust others always in the hope that the trust would be rewarded.

Nothing in their lives taught them these things. In fact most were taught the exact opposite. And in spite of that they choose to do good to others and to trust and hope in the goodness of others.

Many of them are here posting on this forum.

I cannot believe in some innate evil within all people.

I do believe real evil exists but I don't think it in innate.

I think we all have choices. Sometimes they are good, sometimes they are bad. Hopefully, we learn from the choices of others, seeing the results to them and others. I wonder if there is a physical component, hard wiring early in life due to abuse or bad nutrition. But in the end, I see that people are the result of their own choices. It is a difficult lesson to balance our wants and desires with the larger community of life around us.

People are worthless eaters, shyt factories with two legs

I, for one, I'm not a shyt (or is it SHIT you meant) factory. I have my flaws, that is for sure. But, I have done some good things, too, on this little planet we share.

I personally do not have any close friends, just a bunch of people who I speak to regularly.

    I just can't IMAGINE why!

I think that is why I have deep admiration for people that have witnessed, and experienced, the worst of human nature, and are still able to retain their dignity, compassion, and humanity.

Like so many on this board that have lived through, and have been scared, such horrifying experiences. These people choose to help, by whatever means they can, others so that they can, hopefully, find direction and peace. Or, just to be a shoulder to lean on.

I tend to agree (once again) with SS on this. The majority of people are just living their lives in the best way they can. Some, the minority, are predatory.

This to me, does not transfer to 'good' and 'evil' (imho more a christian, or religious, concept), just that we are human. Avoid the predators, and find those with whom we are compatible to spend time with. And yes, anarchy could work.

    {{{homey}}}

I wish you much peace and love - you are too smart and have such good qualities. Please don't let bitterness destroy your life. We need other people, we are social animals.

It's scary to consider making friends after the experiences you have had, I understand. When trust has been shattered, it takes time and lots of energy to rebuild it.

But, after many years of complete solitude, I finally learned how to make friends. I've taken that risk of being hurt, and I will tell you that it's worth it! Life was a lot more boring and lonely when I just had 'acquaintances'. People are imperfect, it's true, but once I was able to really accept that and be more easygoing (ie, expecting less perfection from my friends), I found that friendship is something that I truly enjoy. They actually DON'T expect perfection - that is a very BAD lesson the WT taught us - the rest of the world is not like them. I urge you to give people a chance, my friend; cautiously, but give it a try!

People are a series of choices..some good, some bad. Some days..some times...some moments I'm a good person. Some days...some times...some moments I'm a bad person. All wrapped up in the same package.

SS, I bought a guitar, to punish my mom.

I think I need to pick up a copy of Anne Frank's diary. I've never read it. I am in serious need of some inspiration. So many Jews died and yet some who witnessed such senseless brutality and blind prejudice were able to rise above it and still feel good in their hearts about life and other people...I'm getting verklemft

Thanks talesin. I don't have complete solitude, but more than I care for. If it wasn't for my sister and her family, I'd be done. It is hard to reach out and make friends, I'm a bit of an odd duck sometimes. Taking risks is not something I'm inclined towards.

Me me me, I'm always talking about me, maybe that's the problem...

Thank you all for your responses to this thread and PMs, they are appreciated. I'm off to bed now, won't be able to get back here until tomorrow night. Adios

Overall, I think people are good. Yes there are those who can be total Butt munches, but I think the majority rules with people doing what they can to live together in Humanity. There are many JW's that I encountered growing up who had double lives, all sweet and loving in front of the congregation, yet "Behind closed doors" were worse than a Lot of people that I have encountered in the "World". Humanity has it's pro's and also it's cons, but I think most of us "Worldly people" just want to try to do what's right, and treat others the same way that we would want to be treated.
