Yes he did.....but he counterd the argument with the scripture that said "I want mercy, not sacrifice". Then he told of David entering the most holy and taking the showbread when the priest was the only one allowed inside. The dubs would have stuck to the law rather than accept a reasonable explanation for breaking a law.
He also ate and drank with whores and tax collectors, and heathens, which is not a hot item with the society.
