Personally, I am glad that they are now admitting that they do not know. It is better than making things up.

@longhairgal: you are spot on but this has happened generation after generation. I’m the 3rd generation JW, 2nd gen raised-in. We each expected 1975, then 2000, not sure what people have been looking forward to, 2014, 2024, 2034? I have never known any 4th and 5th gens out there, the disillusion affects families quickly, but they keep promising and failing new victims.

GORB & ANONY MOUS:
I cannot imagine what it would be like to be in the religion now - nor would I want to.
The Witnesses were never able to deliver any ‘New System or New World’.. It was always somebody else, namely God, who was supposed to do this. So, if these prophecies and beliefs were wrong…well guess what? It wouldn’t be happening and said Being wouldn’t be bringing it about because He didn’t say it.
So, the past almost century and a half of wrong predictions by the JWs was just a waste of time for countless people. The ones there now want relief from old age and lack of financial preparation (but they can thank the religion for that).
I didn’t listen back then and they knocked me.. So, here we are now: I prepared and am content to take one day at a time like human beings should;.. they didn’t prepare and are miserable every day and wishing for everything to be over.. SO, Who has the healthier outlook??

Watchtower is just brilliant. We don't know, we're not blind but will pull more stuff out of thin air...

It's about time they admitted it.
But did they really have any option? Hasn't everyone figured out by now that they have no frigging idea?

It almost seems like an apology of sorts but it is simply reactionary. They are looking at their failed date prophecy and how they can wriggle their way out of them since it’s a big issue when examining their religion.
However, it’s not sincere. They wrote this in the same article -
7. What do we know?
Your answer
7 We do well to focus on what we do know—that the last days began in 1914. Jehovah has provided Bible prophecies that not only pinpoint that year but also describe in detail the conditions that have prevailed since then. As a result, we are convinced that “the great day of Jehovah is near.” (Zeph. 1:14)They show their stubbornness in sticking to a teaching that basically only relies on the coincidence of WW1 having occurred in this year. They claim to be able to ‘pinpoint’ that year. ‘Pinpointing’ means with the greatest of accuracy, or absolutely precise or to the finest detail’ Is the Watchtower being modest?

pinpoint - absolutely precise; to the finest degree
LOL! They say Satan was cast down in Oct 1914 when Jesus became king. Satan's being cast down meant woe for the earth and that woe was WW1.
The problem is WW1 started in June/July of 1914. Apparently, world conditions took a turn for the worse 3 to 4 months before Satan was cast down, is when the woe was said to begin.
Not very precise!
_____________
[ws14 7/15 - In October 1914, Jehovah made Jesus King over mankind. At that time, the conclusion, or “the last days,” of Satan’s world began.—2 Timothy 3:1.]
[ w22 July - Why did world conditions take a turn for the worse when Jesus became King? Revelation 6:2 gives an important detail—Jesus’ first mission as newly crowned King was to wage war. Against whom? Against the Devil and his demons. According to Revelation chapter 12, Satan lost the battle, and he and the demons were hurled down to the earth. Enraged, Satan began to vent his anger on humankind, resulting in “woe for the earth.”—Rev. 12:7-12.]
[World War I began after the assassination of Austrian archduke Franz Ferdinand by South Slav nationalist Gavrilo Princip on June 28, 1914.]
[World War I or the First World War (28 July 1914 – 11 November 1918), also known as the Great War,]

Having now read the article, we should note what they still maintain. Para. 7 :
” We do well to focus on what we do know—that the last days began in 1914.
Jehovah has provided Bible prophecies that not only pinpoint that year but also describe in detail the conditions that have prevailed since then. As a result, we are convinced that “the great day of Jehovah is near.”So although they know not when exactly, the day is still “ near” . So the pressure to preach is the same . After all , whatever the “ day and the hour” it will be soon.

One of the most misleading statements in Watchtower publications is that they accurately foretold 1914 to be the “start” of the conclusion of this system of things. Rather, Watchtower falsely predicted 1914 to be the “end” of the system of things, the conclusion of Armageddon and the start of the earthly paradise.
It is important to know what Watchtower preached would happen in the years leading up to and including 1914, and compare this with what it now claims was said.
What Watchtower said
prior to 1914What Watchtower claims it said
prior to 1914"The year A.D. 1878 … clearly marks the time for the actual assuming of power as King of kings, by our present, spiritual, invisible Lord - …" The Time is At Hand (1911 ed) p.239 "The Watchtower has consistently presented evidence to honesthearted students of Bible prophecy that Jesus’ presence in heavenly Kingdom power began in 1914." Watchtower 1993 Jan 15 p.5 "But bear in mind that the end of 1914 is not the date for the beginning, but for the end of the time of trouble. Zion's Watch Tower 1894 Jul 15 p.226 "Jehovah's witnesses pointed to the year 1914, decades in advance, as marking the start of "the conclusion of the system of things." Awake! 1973 Jan 22 p.8 -
