If we were allowed to "opt out" of Social Security, you can bet that most conservatives - and a great deal of liberals as well - would be happy to give up their social security "benefits" because most of us know that our "compulsory retirement account" won't be there by the time we want to use it. Right now, we ALL are just throwing our money into a dark hole.

But let me ask you this. Do you not have older relatives or friends that you know that are dependent now on their social security benefit?
Believe it or not this great democratic republic in which we live has been supportive of some social programs for a hundred years.
The point I was trying to make is that many conservatives like to crow about dems being "socialists" because dems are more supportive, generally speaking, of social programs. That does not make them socialists.
But, as it is not legal to "quit" social security, neither are there any liberals in that same imaginary line.
True. But nothing stops a pious conservative or liberal from donating their benefit back to the US government. ( I know that is sort of silly but consider it hyperbole).
BTW President Bush's recent medicare drug benefit package recently passed is the largest, most expensive, SOCIAL program in decades.
So is he a socialist now?
