We used to go to a movie on Christmas Eve. The theater was nearly empty except for the dubs there.

Now, there are so many that don't celebrate it, that it probably isn't an issue anymore. I was buying some linens the other day at Bed, Bath and Beyond, and heard a clerk tell a customer that Christmas doesn't mean much to him because he is a Buddhist. You never used to hear that. It was only the dubs who didn't celebrate it. But, I know several Buddhists who DO celebrate Christmas, and Muslims do too..................probably not all of them, but the ones I know personally, do.

My JW relatives were tightwads and were happy not to have to get anyone gifts at any time.

I knew LOTS of JWs like that. You could just feel their smugness, and their relief at not having to go to any effort for anyone else. Not just at Christmas, but birthdays, Mother's day...I was always hearing stuff like, "I'm so glad I don't have to mess with that." As if going to some effort for others was just beneath them. Buying a present, or a card, or baking a cake. That was just wasted effort, because they just couldn't imagine enjoying doing something to make someone else happy.

You know, I wonder if they have a warped sense of that. I mean, they're told they should have "joy" in "serving Jehovah", going to assemblies, meetings, etc, and most of them don't really. They're told that the rest of the world should be grateful that they come to their door with their message, and we know they're not. Maybe the fact that every time the WT tells them they should enjoy something, it's drugery at best...maybe it doesn't occur to them how much they could enjoy celebrating something?? Maybe it's just the fact that the WT sucks the fun out of everything that they think holidays or birthdays wouldn't be fun either??
