Do you know the song "Two outta Three ain't bad" by Meatloaf?

I mean, wtf is that all about? Here is this guy telling his g/f that he needs her, he wants her, but there is no way he is ever gonna love her. And she shouldn't be sad, cuz two outta three ain't bad.

I swear, that is just plain stupidity, how the heck shouldn't that girl be sad if her guy starts singing to her:

Baby we can talk all night
But that ain't getting us nowhere
I told you everything I possibly can
There's nothing left inside of here
And maybe you can cry all night
But that'll never change the way that I feel
The snow is really piling up outside
I wish you wouldn't make me leave here

I poured it on and I poured it out
I tried to show you just how much I care
I'm tired of words and I'm too hoarse to shout
But you've been cold to me so long
I'm crying icicles instead of tears

And all I can do is keep on telling you
    I want you
    I need you
But -- there ain't no way I'm ever gonna love you
    Now don't be sad
'Cause two out of three ain't bad
    Now don't be sad
'Cause two out of three ain't bad

You'll never find your gold on a sandy beach
You'll never drill for oil on a city street
I know you're looking for a ruby in a mountain of rocks
But there ain't no Coupe de Ville hiding at the bottom of a Cracker Jack box

    I can't lie
    I can't tell you that I'm something I'm not
    No matter how I try
    I'll never be able
    To give you something
Something that I just haven't got

There's only one girl that I will ever love
And that was so many years ago
And though I know I'll never get her out of my heart
    She never loved me back
    Ooh I know
I remember how she left me on a stormy night
She kissed me and got out of our bed
And though I pleaded and I begged her not to walk out that door
She packed her bags and turned right away
And she kept on telling me
    She kept on telling me
    She kept on telling me

    I want you
    I need you
But there ain't no way I'm ever gonna love you
    Now don't be sad
'Cause two out of three ain't bad
    I want you
    I need you
But there ain't no way I'm ever gonna love you
    Now don't be sad
'Cause two out of three ain't bad
    Don't be sad
'Cause two out of three ain't bad

Baby we can talk all night
But that ain't getting us nowhere

Excuse me??!!!! How exactly is two outta three NOT bad? It's horrible!

Note, I am a huge fan of Meatloaf, but these lyrics are irking me out.

It sounds to me like he's still in love with an ex, and started going out with someone on the rebound. He realises how much he cares for his new partner, but knows he doesn't love her like he loves his ex so it can never work out in the long run. He's just trying to justify it to her so that he doesn't lose a friend who he cares a lot for. IMHO. I'm a big Meatloaf fan too, and had most of his albums on tape, but haven't getton around to getting the cd's yet. And as long as my friend can get the time off, we're going to see him live a week on Tuesday.

    Viv:

P'haps life shouldn't be lived by the credo of Meatloaf? (or any other popular music stars, for that matter).

It could have been about his first love - his mother, who never showed him affection. Just a thought.

you need to ask the song writer, Jim Steiman what he meant. Meatloaf was the only person able to sing Jim's lyrics. He also wrote Celine Dions, hit "If you love me like this, and I love you like that."

Who says that song lyrics have to make sense, or be correct viewpoints on life?

My take on this is that he 1] wants the present girl, feels he 2] needs her but he is honest enough to admit he cannot commit to really 3] love her. - so shrugging his shoulders in male self justification "Two out of three aint bad"

I am a newly converted Meatloaf fan

IMHO, Jim Steinman was one of the best song writers of all time. His lyrics do make you stop and think about real life, not the way it is portrayed in movies and books. Of course, no one wants to hear the truth. If your going to have sex, you want to hear "I want you, I need you, I love you". Nothing wrong with wanting those things said, but isn't it much less painful knowing someones real feelings and intents right up front. What if someone said "I want you, I love you, but I don't need you". For some people, that would be an insult, but for myself, I would rather be in a relationship that was out of desire -- a want, and for growth -- a love, but leave out the need. When people talk about the myth of only one true love, it makes me sick to my stomach.

"I want you" - A desire, your a pleasure in my life, I enjoy being with you...
"I need you" - You give me something that I am lacking... ->
"But there ain't no way I'm ever going to love you" - I can not reciprocate whole-heartedly for your growth, for your ever changing desires.

This sounds like momentary "Falling in Love", not the Love of a marriage or an enduring friendship. These lyrics are classic, as are nearly everything Meatloaf sang on "Bat Out Of Hell" and "Bat Out Of Hell II". I'm not a real fan of his other albums.

IMHO Meatloaf has a great voice but his songs are too damn long. I cringe whenever Paradise by the Dashboard Lights comes on cause it takes FOREVER to end

Damn I'm good! ....I found the anwer Viv!

It's right here in these lyrics that nobody else caught but me,

I'm crying icicles instead of tears

Those lyrics were supposed to say he was crying "testicles"

Meatloaf simply had blueballs, wanted to do his thang, and get the hell out. He's a typical male dirty scumbag bastard in my book!

Baby we can talk all night

This discussion seems to be a repetetive one I told you everything I possibly can He feels empty in the relationship
There's nothing left inside of here even though he's tried to make it work
And maybe you can cry all night
But that'll never change the way that I feel
Her manipulating him isn't going to work anymoreThe snow is really piling up outside
I wish you wouldn't make me leave here
She told him that he had to commit or hit the road

I poured it on and I poured it out
I tried to show you just how much I care
He has done everything in his power to make her happy
I'm tired of words and I'm too hoarse to shout yet they continually argue and fight
But you've been cold to me so long When she doesn't get what she wants she shuts him outI'm crying icicles instead of tears

And all I can do is keep on telling you
    I want you
    I need you
But -- there ain't no way I'm ever gonna love you

You want me to change myself and be something that I'm not

I can't lie I'm trying to be honest with you
I can't tell you that I'm something I'm not I have to be true to myself
    No matter how I try
    I'll never be able
    To give you something
my heart, or to love you the way you need to be loved
Something that I just haven't got

There's only one girl that I will ever love She was the first one to have my heart
And that was so many years ago
And though I know I'll never get her out of my heart
    She never loved me back
She hurt me deeply and I can never let that happen again
    Ooh I know
I remember how she left me on a stormy night
She kissed me and got out of our bed
And though I pleaded and I begged her not to walk out that door
