Montana Women's Prison settles discrimination complaint by Jehovah's Witness

The state has agreed to pay a portion of an inmate’s attorney fees and have a warden undergo training on religion rights to settle a discrimination claim.

May Simmons, an inmate at the Montana Women’s Prison, settled with the Department of Corrections in October, and a copy of the agreement was released this week.

Simmons had alleged the prison discriminated against her by failing to grant her full access to worship services as a Jehovah’s Witness.

After reviewing the claim, the Montana Human Rights Bureau found the department likely violated the law by denying Simmons use of the prison chapel while permitting its use for other religions.

Officials with the Department of Corrections admit no violation of the law and signed the agreement in order to “buy their peace and resolve this case without further proceedings,” the settlement states.

The agreement requires the department to pay $4,400 in attorney fees for Simmons’ attorney, Eric Holm, and to pay $1,000 to Simmons. READ MORE:

A criminal JW being denied use of a chapel shared with Babylon the Great, then getting financial recompense for this utterly appalling deprivation......

It would appear that this particular inmate is a habitual litigant who complains through various channels about every conceivable slight or inconvenience. Whether she is or ever was an actual JW is open to question. She seems to be in perpetual pursuit of some sort of "settlement" or concession over one thing or another.

I know nothing about this particular person, but there are those who are always trying to get something for nothing. Simply being a JW doesn't rule out being of this sort. Examples abound...

Ridiculous. Someone milking the system for profit.

Why do you have some "right" to practice your religion in prison?

Before you should "constitution", it also says you have the right to bear arms, so why can't you have guns in prison? If you can be denied one right, why not another?

Nothing prevents you praying, in your head. Anything else is just pandering.

The JW's better hope that if Mary Simmons get's baptized, they don't cross her somehow. She's apparently not afraid too to use the law to get what she wants, no matter how petty the matter or flimsy the claim is.

Having a woman in a men's prison is beyond the absurd.

Even a man visiting the prison would be wise to carry the current publications along with a jar of Vaseline.
