    Many evils have been done in the name of Christ throughout history, nobody can deny that. I question, however, if the people doing those evils were in fact Christian. How could they be? Christ did not teach such behavior, nor does the Christian scriptures.

    That behaviour was undeed unchristian, ie not following the teachings of Christ. The cause of that behaviour is much more simple and much older too: power corrupts.

    The Church was in total control and wasn't going to let it slip away. Abandonning the founding principles and the original high ideals so was no objection at all. Religion had become a means of gaining control over people. Instead of liberating mind and spirit it became a way to subdue them.
