There are intelligent people....too numerous to count.....that fall prey to cults and similar types, all through history.
Stacy mentioned emotions overide reason and she's right.
Ever seen a woman fall for a man who she knew was a piece of shitsky? After she's abused and dumps his but.....if she ever does......she's says to herself...."how could I have let him done this to me"? It's much the same way with religion and other scams. We want to believe something bad enough even when it overides reason.

LOL sally---judging by that "blank" post I sent (computer glitch) let me tell you just how stupid I feel.....
SNS--you are not alone. In the transition from leaving JWs to getting on with my life--I always thought I was making some kind of stupid mistake--and you know what--it just did not matter. We live and we learn. Most of the time it was all in my head.. And if I did fudge up somewhere-no one really noticed or cared. The important thing is to keep looking forward and thinking positively. Do I feel stupid having gone door to door all those years? Yes. Does it matter to me now? No

It's natural. We thought we were doing what was right. Self-denial was part of the ticket to feeling approved, even though the things we denied ourselves (or our kids) were in large measure harmless.

Yep. I feel mostly stupid about how vehemently I would argue in defense of these lies, and how put upon and martyred I would act when others would object to my unreasonable and self-destructive beliefs.

unfortunately I have not been so smart in this department either... (not counting my current man who is awesome)
I was 'force fed' as Stacy commented being one of the options. Tried to be the obedient daughter and never question. Mom had researched religion, looking for her answers. The must be right?? right? wrong... It seems crazy it took me until now to finally see. What a waste of half of my life.

Most, if not all go through that phase. sns, ask people who have taken golf lessons and maybe one or two will tell you that their heads are still on, while many others are more screwed 'after' taking lessons than before! It applies in others areas of life too.
